COLI CRISIS TALKS : European Union agriculture ministers will be holding emergency meetings about the E. coli outbreak that has killed 22 people and caused 2,200 people to fall ill in 12 countries, officials said Monday. The EU suffered a setback Monday after tests found the German farm believed to be at the center of the outbreak was actually not at fault. Initially, German officials had said Spanish vegetables were the source of the outbreak, but have since backed away from these claims as Spanish officials have demanded compensation for losses by farmers due to the accusations, which were proven to be false. Scientists say the outbreak is caused by a hybrid strain of the E. coli virus, toxic to humans but previously not linked to food poisoning.
