The Panama Hat Trail (La Ruta De Los Panamas) by Tom Miller (Travel Narrative/History) Miller’s entertaining and insightful social history of Ecuador as told through its hat-making history. It’s a classic example of travel writing, and one of the best things written on Ecuador.

Evolution’s Workshop: God and Science on the Galapagos Islands by Edward J. Larson (Science). What sets this book apart is that it doesn’t just cover Darwin, but also examines what came afterwards, and how the islands continued to influence other evolutionary theories. The same author has also written about the Scopes trial in summer for the Gods (for which he won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for History) and the creationist controversy in Trial and Error.
