But Carmen Carrera admits that her family would not be equally happy if she had chosen to marry an African-American.

"Well, I'll be very candid. My mom would not have been happy. She just wouldn't have been. I think she is racist, even thought she says she is not, but it would have been trouble and we would have attracted a lot of attention in Mexico."

Her husband Emil Abate says his family in California would not have objected to his marrying a woman of any race.

"If I told my family, they would be accepting that. My family is that way lucky for me."

While marriages between white people and Asians, Hispanics and even native Americans flourish, not all Americans are equally open to the idea of a black and white marriage. Indeed, in this picture of racial and ethnic melding, African Americans are noticeably underrepresented. According to the 1990 census, fewer than 1 in 10 black men and 1 in 25 black women, aged 25 to 34, take white spouses. But although the rates of inter-racial marriages with blacks are lower than with other racial minorities, they are also increasing. Yugoslav-born Natasha Nenadovic is married to African-American Clarence Simmons. They have a four-year-old son Marcus. Natasha says itthe first marriage for both and she is very happy.

"He is a nice guy. He is very devoted to his family, which I really, really appreciate. He is a hard worker. And ... what else could I tell you? I mean, he makes us all really, really happy."

Natasha is white and her husband is black. What does that make their son Marcus? The high rates of inter-racial marriages and a growing number of mixed-race children they produce have recently forced the federal government to rethink the types of racial classifications it will use in its census.
