Harry Potter’s Castle--Alnwick (pronounced “Annick”) Castle

The sun is out in full force again this morning and I 1)blink blearily, stifling 2)yawns as we step out into the 3)crisp cool air. We have been so fortunate with the weather. Feeling as if the sun is smiling on us, we shoulder our bags and cameras and are ready for the day’s adventures. Heading north on the A1, we pass through the lovely village of Newton with its stone 4)cottages and 5)trimmed gardens.

Alnwick is the northernmost town we will visit on this journey through Northumberland. Our 6)route takes us right past Alnwick Castle, so we pull up and stop for a few moments to admire it in the bright morning light. To many people, their first sight of this glorious 7)medieval castle can seem 8)foreboding. Alnwick Castle is the second largest 9)inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle. The castle is the home of the Duke of Northumberland whose family, the Percys, have lived here since 1309. It was rebuilt in the 18^th century over the original Norman castle, which retained its massive 10)keep and curtain wall.

The border 11)stronghold has survived many battles and now peacefully 12)dominates the surrounding countryside. Statues of soldiers were placed atop the gatehouse in an attempt to 13)dissuade 14)marauding Scots from attacking. From a distance I suppose the castle would appear to be well protected and on guard at all times. But at closer proximity these figures are small, child-sized, and I can imagine the approaching Scots saying, “Och but they’re wee 15)laddies! We can tak ’em!”

历经众多战役的边境堡垒仍保存下来，现在安然地高耸于周围乡村之上。士兵雕像站在城楼上，力图阻止前来抢劫的苏格兰人的袭击。从远处看我觉得古堡似乎被很好地保护着，而且总有人在站岗。但是走近一看，这些雕像很矮小，个子像孩童，我可以想象迎面而来的苏格兰人在说：“哦，他们只不过是很小的家伙！我们可以打败他们！”
