Self – introduction: Professor Feshbach is the pre-chairman of the Education College in UCLA and now she works part-time for the college. During the speech, Professor Feshbach introduced the undergraduate & graduate education in USA briefly. Now I make a summary as follows:

Undergraduate
community college: two years, with few majors and a small campus
college:four years, with a small amount but more specific majors
university:four years where to get a broad knowledge education

Where they go high school?
Academic rank & SAT

if high:  university

if OK:   state college; community college   

Tuitions(university cost more; private college cost more)
Geography(Is the transportation convenient?)
Personal interest

Life style interests (big city or small city?  Study or activities?)

Different universities with different strength
Family history
Future plans (prepare for the work or keep doing research)

Admission:

Honor
Social activities (sports & experience in students’ union)

Biography / personal statement& recommendation
Personal statement is very important, you should find out about the institutions, also make it clear what contribution you can do to it and it can do to you.

Graduate education:
Offer graduates from college and university
Undergraduate(broad)& Graduate (specific) if you can afford
Specific college(prof. school):law, medical  only available in graduate school
Reason for choice:Future plans, professors.

2008年2月4日上午,美国加州大学洛杉矶分校大学 Norma Feshbach教授在UCLA教育学系大楼为China Future Leadership Project (CFL)中国未来领导精英项目的同学们作了精彩的有关美国本科及研究生申请情况的演讲。

美国高等教育等级情况
undergraduate阶段:
community college:2年,专业少,校园很小
college:4年,专业较少,较专,校园小
university:4年,专业全,校园大

一、美国大学择校的考虑因素
历史成绩(高中成绩、SAT)
家庭收入(university较贵,其余较便宜;州立大学较便宜,私立大学较便宜)
家庭住处(方便与否?学校住宿较贵)
个人兴趣(各大学长项不同)
家庭历史(父兄所读大学等)
未来目标(工作还是读研的导向)

二、学校择生的考虑因素
成绩奖章(honor)
课外记录(体育运动、学生会经历等)
自传推荐(biography/personal statement和recommendation letter)
与收入无关

三、研院情况
接受college和university毕业生
本科毕业生在调整后(财务、未来之路等考虑)接受研院教育
专业学院(prof. school):law, medical等只在研院开设
学生考虑因素:未来道路选择(研究/工作)、课程设置、教授

最后,Feshbach教授亲切询问了一些CFL成员感兴趣的方向,并鼓励我们积极努力,实现自己的理想。她告诉我们:自己本来是读会计学的,在会计学的教学工作中找到了乐趣,转到了教育学方向。讲座后,Feshbach教授为大家分发了学院的介绍册,本人与她的博士生一起与CFL成员们进行了亲切的会谈。
