北海是大西洋上大约一百米深的浅边缘海。它是石勒苏益格-荷尔斯泰因州的西部边界。海风海浪海花以及潮汐的变化吸引了许多人涌向这里。在这里可以看到平坦的低湿地，它是公元前四千年至公元前两千年完全由大海造就的独一无二的景色。潮汐的变化——涨潮和落潮，在北海地区非常明显。
