    LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN(b.Bonn,16Dec.1770;d.Vienna,26 March,1827).Despite an unhappy childhood,an unlucky love life,and deafness that nearly drove him to suicide,he became one of the supreme creative artists in the history of our civilization.His Fifth and Sixth Symphonies were complted within a few months of each other and first performed at a four-hour-long concert in December 1808-the audience nearly froze to death in the unheated theatre.The Fifth,possily the best-known piece ever composed,is dominated by a dramatic four-note motif suggesting fate or the struggle against adversity(during World War Ⅱthe Allies used it as a victory symbol).The'Pastoral' grew out of Beethoven's love of nature.
