What I wish I knew when I was 20

 读书笔记

Charpter 1 :Buy one , get two Free

What would you do to earn money if all you had was five dollars and two hours?

How they do this? Here’s a clue: the teams that made the most money didn’t use the five dollars at all. They realized that focusing on the money actually framed the problem way too tightly. They understood that five dollars is essentially nothing and decided to reinterpret the problem more broadly. What can we do to make money if we start with absolutely nothing? They ramped up their observation skills , tapped into their talents, and unlocked their creativity to identify the problems in their midst—problems they might have seen before but had never thought to solve. … If you take into account that many of the team didn’t use the funds at all, then their financial returns were infinite.

First , opportunities are abundant. “The bigger the problem, the bigger the opportunity. Nobody will pay you to solve a non-problem”

Second, regardless of the size of the problem, there are usually creative ways to use the resources already at your disposal to solve them.

Third, we so often frame the problems too tightly.

“T-shaped people” , those with a depth of knowledge in at least on discipline and a breadth of knowledge about innovation and entrepreneurship that allows them to work efficiently with professionals in other disciplines to bring ideas to life. No matter what their role, having an entrepreneurial mind-set is key to solving problems, from small chanllenges that face each of us every day to looming world crises that require that the attention and efforts of the entire planet. In fact, entrepreneurship cultivates a range of important life skills, from leadership and team building to negotiation, innovation and decision making.

Failure is an important part of life’s learning process. The key to success is the ability to extract the lessons out of each of these experience to move on with that new knowledge.

Charpter 2 : Upside-Down Circus

Why don’t most of us view problems as opportunities in our everyday lives? Essentially, we are not taught to embrace problems. We’re taught that problems are to be avoided, or something to complain about.

The more we take on problems ,the more confident and proficient we become at solving them. Attitude is perhaps the biggest determinant of what we can accomplish. In fact, being an entrepreneur means constantly facing big problems and finding creative ways to tame them.

How to create as much value as possible with rubber bands. One team come up with the idea for “Do Bands”, bracelets that give people a simple incentive to “do” the things they often put off doing. Do Bands have a few guiding principles:

    1. Put one around your wrist with a promise to do something

    2. Take it off when you have completed the task

    3. Record your success online at the Do Bands Web site. Each Do Band comes with a number printed on it so you can look up the actions it has inspired

    4. Pass the Do Bands along to someone else.

Sometimes, something as simple as a rubber band is all that’s needed to mobilize people to actually do something, to bridge the gap between inaction and action.

The first step to solving big problems is to identify them. The key to need finding is identifying and filling gaps – that is , gaps in the way people use products, gaps in the services available, and gaps in the stories they tell when interviewed about their behavior.Stretch the boundaries and challenge all traditional assumptions

The importance of having the zeal to solve a grand problem, as opposed to being motivated to make money. It’s better to make meaning than to make money. If your goal is to make meaning by trying to solve a big problem in innovative ways, you are more likely to make money than if you start with the goal of making money, in which case you will probably not make money or meaning.Problems are abundant, just waiting for those willing to find inventive solution.“I now know that there isn’t anything I can’t do”

Chapter 3 :BIKINI or DIE

We draw imaginary lines around what we think we can do –lines that limit us much more than the rules imposed by society at large

Larry Page, co-founder of Google noted that it is often easier to have big goals than to have small goals. With small goals ,there are very specific ways to reach them and more ways we can go wrong. With big goal, you are usually allocated more resources and there are more ways to achieve them.

She believes that if others think you ideas are crazy, then you must be on the right track.

Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, to have healthy disregard for impossible , and to turn well-worn idea on their heads.

The sole rule is that you are limited only by your energy and imagination.

Chapter 4 Please take out your wallets

Over time, I’ve became increasingly aware that the world is divided into people who wait for others to give them permission to do the things they want to do and people who grant themselves permission.

There is considerable research showing that those willing to stretch the boundaries of their current skills and willing to risk trying something new.

“The biggest ally of superachievers is the inertia of others”

He succeeded by creatively leveraging what he did have –his energy, his willingness to work hard, and his drive to make it happen. Each person he studied has a story as unique as a fingerprint. The consistent theme is that they pay attention to current trends and leverage their own skills to build their influence.  The find ways to sway history, as opposed to waiting for history to sway him.

Chapter 5 : The Secrete Sauce of Silicon Valley

Failures are also a sign that you have taken on challenges that expand your skills.

The most powerful learning comes from experiencing failures as well as successes.

Despites all of the efforts of talented teams ,many of them will fail

If you throw gasoline on a log, all you get is a wet log; But if you throw gasoline on a small flame, you get an inferno.

Chapter 6 : No Way …. Engineering is for girls

I guarantee that the things you’re likely to remember from the journey are those that weren’t on your original schedule. They will be the unexpected things that jumped in your path, surprising you along the way.

Build a career in such a way that you optimized the quality of the people with whom you work, which ends up increasing the quality of opportunities that flow your way. Great peoples support each other, build valuable networks, and create a steady stream of new opportunities. Essentially, the ecosystem in which you live and work is a huge factor in predicting the types of opportunities that will present themselves.

As you move through your carreer , you will be well served by frequently reassessing where you are and where you want to go.

Do be rush to your destination – the side trips and unexpected detours quite often lead to the most interesting people, places, and opportunities. And, finally, be wary of all career advices , including me, as you figure out what’s right for you.

Chapter 7. Turn Lemonade Into Helicopters

There is no such thing as luck, It’s all hardwork

The harder you work, the luckier you get. You can manufacture you luck by working incredibly hard and focusing on our goal.

Chapter 8  Paint the Target around the Arrow.

Showing appreciation for the things others do for you has a profound effect on how you’re perceived.

Because we live in such a small world, it really is important not to burn the bridge, no matter how tempted you might be.

Your reputation is your most valuable asset – so guard it well.

The key to a successful negotiation is to ferret out everyone’s interests so you can maximize the outcome for everyone. Create the win-win solution

The higher you reach within your organization, the less important your individual contribution become. Instead, your job becomes leading, inspiring , motivating others. Most of work is done by colleagues tasked with implementing your ideas.

“Paint the target around the Arrow” means that you should pick up the most talented person you can – the arrow—and then craft the job – the target –around what he or she does best. If you allow really talented people to do what they do best , then the results are astonishing.

Chapter 9: Will this be on the Exam?

There is big difference between trying to do something and actually doing it.

Life isn’t a dress rehearsal, you won’t never get a second chance to do your best.

Chapter10   Experimental Artifacts

Uncertainty is the essence of life, and it fuels opportunity.

I now know that uncertainty is the fire that sparks innovation and the engine that drives us forward. I wish someone had told me to embrace that uncertainty.
