这是我最近在《中小学英语教学与研究》08年第四期上发表的一篇文章，是我收集整理近十年的资料写成的，有助于大家深刻理解on表示“支撑”、由---支撑“的用法。发到博客上，也请大家提出意见。

谈谈on表示“支撑”、“由---支撑”的用法

On是英语中十分活跃的词汇之一，仅作介词的用法就有30余种。由于一般词典等工具书或介绍不详、或忽列某种用法，很多学习者似懂非懂或理解不准确。本文就on表示“支撑、由…支撑”的用法，结合笔者学习中收集的资料加以归纳整理，作一探讨，供大家参考，以利于举一反三。

关于on的这种用法，笔者发现《Longman Dictionary of Contemporay English》的解释最为清晰明了：

“▶SUPPORTING YOUR BODY◀  used to say what part of someone's body is touching the ground or another surface and supporting their weight.”

由此可见，on意思是“支撑身体”，表示“（身体的）……部位与地面接触，用……部位着地, 由……支撑”等意思。这种用法主要见于两种结构：

一、  on＋身体的某一部位。常常用来表示“站立、步行、蹲坐、跪下”等动作方式。

1.He jumped on one foot.他用一只脚跳。

2.Be careful or you’ll fall on your backside. 小心点，不然你会仰天摔一跤。

3.He was  on his hands and knees searching for something.他正趴在地上找着什么东西。

4.Get down on your knees! 跪下！

5. He lay on her face /on his back /on his side in his bedroom.他俯卧/仰卧/侧卧在寝室里。

6.He was standing on one foot.他单腿站立着。

7.The boy  was standing on his hands.这男孩两手着地倒立着。

8.He stood on his head.他倒立着。

9. I have been on my legs all day and I am tired out.我站了一整天，累极了。

10.The dog was sitting on its haunches.那条狗蹲坐着。

11.The baby was crawling  on its fours.那婴儿用四肢爬行。

12.He went up the steep path on all fours.他手足并用地攀爬上陡峭的小路。

13.Don’t just sit on your bum doing nothing; come on!不要光坐着不做事，来吧！

14.Be careful or you’ll fall on your backside.小心点，不然你会仰天摔一跤。

15.He sits on his arse all day doing nothing.他整天光坐着，什么也不干。

16.I begged her forgiveness on my knees.我跪着恳求她宽恕。

17.She fell on her hands and knees.她手膝着地倒了下去。

18.He fell on his side and then moved no more.

他先是侧身倒了下去，然后再也动弹不得了。

19.She hopped carefully on one foot and then on the other.

她很小心，先是用这只脚跳着走，后是用那只脚跳着走。

需要特别提醒大家注意的是，on foot（步行），on tiptoe（踮着脚尖走）等词组在长期的使用中，已简化形成固定的短语，没有复数形式，也不需要加物主代词。此外大家在阅读中会见到on one’s feet，但它不表示“步行”，而是表示“站立”。如：

1.My bicycle is broken, so I’ll have to travel on foot.因为自行车坏了，我不得不徒步旅行。

2.I go to school on foot every day.我每天徒步上学。

3.The nurse walked on tiptoe so as not to wake up the patients.

护士踮着脚走路以免吵醒病人。

4.He was on his feet again in a crack.他即刻又站立起来了。

二、on＋物体或物体的某一部位。这类短语常用来表示物体放置的方式，如“倒立，竖立”，有时用来表示行走的方式，如“踩高跷，靠拐杖（行走）”等。如：

1.It makes my hair stand on end.这让我的头发都竖立起来了。

2.Place the box on end.把箱子竖着放。

3.Cripples go on crutches.残疾人靠拐杖行走。

4.Can you stand a dime on edge? 你能把一角硬币竖起来吗？

5.They are walking on stilts.他们正在踩高跷。

6.Please put the barrel on end.请把这只桶竖起来。

7. A tripod is so called because it stands on three feet.三脚桌因三只脚支撑而得名。

8.I was hanging on a rope. 我被一根绳吊着。
