‘光阴似箭’是人生常有的感叹。英文也有类似的谚语：Time flies like an arrow, and time lost never returns.（光阴似箭，一去不还）。 较简单的说法，则是Time flies.（时光飞逝），Time has wings.（时光有翅膀）、Time flees away without delay. （时光飞逝不停留）。Time flies when you are taking an examination. 即 ‘参加考试时，时间过得特别快’。

但时间有时也会过得特别慢，尤其是在苦恼或无聊的时候。这时你可以说：How time drags! Drag是‘拖拉’，例如：I dragged him out of the cave.（我把他从洞穴里拖出来）。拖着脚走，是to drag one's feet，往往引伸解作‘拖延’，例如：(1) I noticed the tired child dragging his feet.（我发觉那疲倦的孩子拖着脚走）。(2) He appears to be dragging his feet in this matter.（他在这件事上似乎有意拖延）。How time drags! 是说时间似乎拖着脚走。

此外，to have time on one's hands是‘闲着没有事做’，例如：Let me help you clean up . I have time on my hands anyway.（我帮你打扫吧，反正我没有事做）。假如Time hangs heavy on one's hands.，那是说‘没法打发重重压在手上的时间’，例如：With time hanging heavy on my hands, I decided to do some voluntary social work.（我闷得发慌，决定做些义务社会工作）。

此外，要说时间似乎完全停滞，可说Time is at a standstill. At a standstill是‘静止、停顿’的意思。
