有这样一道选择题:

To understand the grammar of the sentence, you must break it ____ into parts. 

A. up   B. down   C. off   D. out 

空处是填up 还是填down，看似都有道理，因为词典上有这样的例子（1）Sentences can be broken up into clauses. (2) Each lesson is broken down into several units. 如果查英汉词典，都有“分解、分裂、拆散”之类的意思，没有讲它们之间的区别用法，即使有些汉语解释也说得模模糊糊，教师讲不透，学生莫衷一是。

但如果查看英英词典，看看英文解释，就能很清楚地区别它们。

break up: to divide something into smaller parts

break down: to divide something into parts in order to analyse it or make it easy to do

由英文解释便可清楚地看出本题选down，因为把句子分成几个部分是为了更好地分析理解这个句子的语法，有强烈的目的性。

另外，break up是物理意义上的“分解”，break down是化学意义上的“分解”，学生记着记着就记混了。有一个简单的方法，up and down 理化，因为按习惯，物理总是排在化学前。找点小窍门来记就再也不会记混淆。

又如view, sight, scene, scenery, landscape，都有“风景，景色”之意，它们常常在各式各类考题中出现，做与这些词有关的练习题，学生一般是连猜带蒙，从未把它们真正地弄清楚过，那么看看它们的英文解释就比较清楚了。

View: the ability to see something from a particular place 由英文解释可知，view系常用词, 指“能看到的或在视野之内的景物”。

Sight: a person or thing you see that has a particular featuer 根据英文解释，也是视线所及，但更强调有特征的人为情景或奇观。

Sights: the interesting places, especially in a town or city that are often visited by tourists 用复数时与用单数意思是不同的，复数显然是指“风景名胜”，尤其是城里的旅游景点之类。

Scene: a view that you can see in a picture or from the place where you are 意义也同view，指“展现在眼前的风景、景色、景象”，强调整体的自然景观或人为景观。但是它指事发的现场、地点，或是电影、戏剧的镜头、场景以及绘画、摄影作品时，意义差别较大，则另当别论。

Scenery: natural things such as trees, hills, and lakes that you can see in a particular place 很明显，scenery指山、水、花草等自然景观。

Landscape: everything you can see when you look across a large area of land, especially in the country 尤指陆上风景、山水画、乡村风景。

以上各题不从严格意义上讲有的可以换用，要精准地掌握它们还需要在不断地阅读中去体味。

汉语和英语毕竟是属于东西方不同语系的两种语言，有较大的差异。用英语解释英语会更准确明了，特别是高三学生已有一定的英语基础，完全能够看懂英文解释。同时，多使用英英词典也为今后的进一步学习英语打下良好的基础。
