Good morning, class. I’m glad to see you. Welcome to remedial high
school(centre)
for National College Entrance
Examination. We come from different high schools or different
classes and maybe some of us are strange one another, but “meeting
as wanderers alike, why should we mind if we knew each other
before?”(同是天涯沦落人,相逢何必曾相识?) The centre will be your home, and you
will study here, live here and have sports here. We believe we’ll
soon become classmates, roomates and close friends.
We have our advantages. First, we have experienced NMET, and we
have known what NMET is like. Next time we should be calmer but not
so nervous as first time. Secondly, since we choose returning high
school, we must be ready to meet some obstruction and determined to
overcome all kinds of difficulties. I believe some of us will get
rid of the old habits. Thirdly, we have an idea that we have the
strongest subject and the weakest subject. Therefor we should focus
the emphasis on the weakest one and spend more time on
it.
I’m going to grade you 3 groups. Whoever gained over 120 marks only
“keep warm”, that is to say, they needn’t spend too much on
English. For examplle, in my former class ,a girl called T, (maybe
some of us knew her) she was allowed to do other subjects except
English in my class, but as a result, she got 134
high marks in this NMET.
How to learn English? . some advice for
you.
Listening
Take a tape and listen to it over and over again. Don’t look at
materials eagerly. If you look at materials early, you actually
practice reading. You’d better have a “the time machine” or
“repeater”(复读机). If you use a recorder, please use “rewind” often.
Finally I suggest you listen to English news, like BBC broadcast or
American Voice. Of course you can’t understand completely, but you
can imitate the pronunciation and intonation. if
you have a good chance, you can see the English films.
Speaking
In English class we should speak English aloud. Sometimes we ask
and answer the questions, sometimes we retell the texts. Don’t be
shy. Don’t be afraid of mistakes. Now the test of spoken English is
separate in the entrance exam. But when you go to college, you’ll
find some students are excellent in oral English.
Reading
Reading is the most important of four skills in NMET (National
Matriculation English Test). It takes a large proportion. How to
read? First, you read quickly and silently to get a general idea.
When you come to a new word or phrase, don’t look it up in the
dictionary. You can guess the meaning by context. Second, you read
slowly and carefully. Use the dictionary and write down new words
and phrases. Everyone must have a new-word-collecting note and try
to enlarge your vocabulary.
Here, as to vocabulary ,I shall talk more. That you can’t learn
English well just because your vocabulary is too small. Now I tell
you that vocabulary is very important in the learning of English.
Without a good vocabulary, you can’t read, listen and write. So
spend more time on the memory of the new words. Memorizing new
words takes a long period of time and it happens all the
time.
Writing
Writing is very important too and it is more difficult than
reading. Some Chinese students used to write Chinglish. For
example, 这台收音机坏了。)It may be translated: This radio is bad. ( 1.
There is something wrong with the radio. 2. This radio doesn’t
work. 3. This radio is out of order. ) So we must pay attention to
English idioms. It is necessary to recite some English sentences
and articles.
Learning English can be fun but I find that it is boring for some
of the students to do it. The more you learn, the more interested
you will get in it.
By the way, let me introcuce
myself. I’m Mr X. after school you can call me Uncle X or Old X. I
will make friends with you.
I hope you have good progress in English and in a year you’ll be
admitted to ideal colleges.
That’s all. Thank you!
