新冠病毒已在全球夺取二百万人生命
Global coronavirus death toll passes two million as grim
milestone reached
The number of people who have died of coronavirus around the
world has hit two million, according to a count from Johns Hopkins
University.
The UK has recorded the fifth-highest death toll of any
country with more than 87,000 deaths recorded within 28 days of a
confirmed positive test.
The USA takes the unenvied top spot with more than 389,000
people dying of the virus, followed by Brazil, India and Mexico
with 207,000, 152,000 and 137,000 deaths respectively.
Worldwide deaths from coronavirus hit one million on September
19 but it has taken just 108 days to reach two million.
Boris Johnson has closed the UK border to anyone who does not
have negative Covid test and will demand all arrivals quarantine
for ten days.
The PM said he was closing all remaining travel corridors into
the country from 4am Monday in a bid to keep out new strains of the
virus.
The news comes after Ministers expressed fears over a new
strain of the virus from Brazil.
He told the Downing Street press conference: “It’s precisely
because we have the hope of that vaccine and the risk of new
strains coming from overseas that we must take additional steps now
to stop those strains from entering the country.
“Yesterday we announced that we’re banning flights from South
America and Portugal and to protect us against the risk from
as-yet-unidentified strains we will also temporarily close all
travel corridors from 0400 on Monday.
“Following conversations with the devolved administrations we
will act together so this applies across the whole of the
UK.”
On Friday, the Government said a further 1,280 people had died
within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19, bringing the UK
total to 87,295.
