每当走到稀为人迹的波托马哥河就让我想起 Joshph Conrad 在 Heart of Darkness 小说中的一段描述：“Going up that river was like travelling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings. An empty stream, a great silence, and impenetrable forest. The air was warm, thick, and heavy, sluggish. There was no joy in the brilliance of sunshine. The long stretches of the waterway ran on, deserted, into the gloom of over-shadowed distances."

塞纳河，一条祖国的河，法兰西的。

泰晤士河，一条祖国的河，英伦半岛的。

波托马克河(POTOMAC RIVER)，一条祖国的河 (National River)，美利坚的。可是知道的人不多，不仅外国人，就连美国人自己。

波托马克河实在不同与塞纳河，泰晤士河。塞纳河，泰晤士河有着她们的文明，战争，宗教，辉煌。波托马哥河没有。

Joshph Conrad，波兰水手，40岁开始用英文写作，从来没有到过美国，也没有见到波托马克河。可是，波托马克河在某种时间，某种空间上浓重地遗留着Joshph Conrad 笔下的痕迹。她那么茂密，那么处女，那么沉沉地留在过去和远处。年轻的美国，工业商业化的美国蕴藏着一个鲜为人知的角落。

 

      

 

      波托马克河发源于西维吉尼亚，从西向东，流经维吉尼亚州，马里兰州，首都华盛顿，注入大西洋。在进入华盛顿之前的15英里处的GREAT FALL 豁然在乱石杂岩中奔腾咆哮，使劲浑身的野性后，进入华盛顿。

 

      

 

      

     即便她进入了华盛顿，仍然十分茂密 (去年照的，对岸是华盛顿西北区的乔治城)。

       嘿嘿，有了人影，波托马克河就显得不那么过去了。
