Pallab Ghosh, from the BBC, will lead the new 7-member board as President of the World Federation of Science Journalists. Melbourne saw a major renewal of the WFSJ Board with four new members. Mr. Ghosh was already a member of the Board as a Member-at-large.
Valeria Roman (El Clarin newspaper, Argentina) is a new member-at large, while Jia Hepeng (freelance science journalist and SciDev.net correspondent, China) is the new Secretary.
Deborah Blum (author and professor at Wisconsin University) and Nadia El-Awady (editor with Islamonline, Cairo) graduate from the Program Committee to become respectively Member-at-large and Treasurer of the new Board.
Diran Onifade (reporter with Nigerian TV) moves from Secretary to Vice-President and outgoing President Wilson da Silva (editor of Cosmos magazine, Australia) continues to serve as Past-President.
On Wednesday 18 April, during the 5th World Conference of Science Journalists, in Melbourne (Australia), the WFSJ General Assembly not only elected the new Board but selected the members of the Program and Finance Committees.
Deborah Blum is the new Chair of the Program Committee. She is joined by three new members: Cristina Valsecchi (Italian science journalist), Lee Keunyoung (staff writer with The Hankyoreh, Seoul), and Christina Scott (freelance and SciDev.net correspondent in South Africa). Lisbeth Fog, a radio science journalist from Colombia, continues to serve on the Program Committee.
Nadia El-Awady, moves from Chair of the Program Committee to Chair of the Finance Committee and Treasurer position. She will be supported by Jim Cornell, President of the International Science Writers Association, and Kaianders Sempler (science journalist with Ny Teknik in Sotckholm), both WFSJ veterans.
One of the first task of the new President and board will be to seek the suggestions, ideas and opinions of the member associations. 23 of the 32 WFSJ member associations participated and voted at the WFSJ General Assembly, on Wednesday 18 April 2007.
