Harvard Kennedy School China SMEs
Conference
Sun., Feb.13, 2011, Harvard University,
Cambridge, MA, USA
Conference Overview
After 30 years of
economic reform and internationalization, China has now become not
only the world’s biggest exporter, but also the world’s second
largest and fastest growing economy. Despite this success, the
other side of the Chinese Miracle is riddled with various social
and environmental problems, such as massive biodiversity loss,
climate deterioration, and social inequality. In the contemporary
Chinese economy, there is a prominent imbalance between State Owned
Enterprises (SOEs) and Privately Owned Enterprises (basically Small
and Medium Enterprises - SMEs). It is startling that world media
and general academic and corporate research often focuses on
gigantic Chinese SOEs such as Sinopec and ICBC, despite the fact
that more than 55% of real Chinese GDP and more than 85% of
employment opportunities are actually created by Chinese privately
owned enterprises - especially the SMEs. Moreover, under the 2010
“Guidelines to Promote the Healthy Development of Chinese Private
Capital” and the 12th Five-year Plan by the State Council, Chinese
SMEs will likely assume more prominence as they gain access to
formerly restricted industries such as energy and natural
resources, upgrade corporate business strategies, enhance
management efficiency and obtain better opportunities to invest
overseas. Chinese SMES will leverage their wide-ranging resources
to provide better solutions for pertinent social and environmental
problems in areas such as education, philanthropy, green
infrastructure, and affordable housing and ultimately will
contribute to the social progress of China and increase the world’s
prosperity.
Under this grand backdrop, The Harvard Kennedy School China
Society is organizing the 2011 HKS China SMEs Conference with the
cooperation from the Harvard Club of Beijing and the China Huatuo
CEO forum, a leading Chinese SME consulting corporation. Through
lectures and expert led discussions, participants will have the
opportunity to analyze the current situation of Chinese SMEs and
engage in candid debate with respect to the challenges and
opportunities these enterprises face. The goal of the conference is
to increase knowledge and awareness of Chinese SMEs among Harvard
Students through the creation of constructive dialogues and
relationships with various academic, political, economic, social
and international stakeholders.
