Nowadays, there are so many sources of news and information that is difficult to know whom to believe or who is telling the truth. Do you agree or
disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to
develop your essay.
答:While it is true that the number of sources of news and information that many of us have access to has increased, this increased availability of information has actually made it easier to determine who is telling the truth. The fact
that were fewer sources of information available in the past does
not necessarily imply that those information sources were reliable,
and the increased availability of sources of information today
gives the consumer more choice about what he or she wishes to
believe.
When I was growing up there were only a few television channels, and the Internet had yet to become widely used.
The lack of a wide variety of information sources presented the
illusion that what was presented on television and in newspapers
was the truth, but what it really represented was a narrow scope of
opinion and lack of exposure to the wide variety of opinions that
can lead to truth. In fact, a false story could
be presented on television or in the newspaper and the lack of a
competing opinion could lead many to take the false story to be
true.
Nowadays, it seems like everywhere we turn we are bombarded with different sources of information. There are
hundreds of television channels and millions of different websites
online that present a wide variety of opinions on any subject one
can imagine. This onslaught of information can be
overwhelming, but what it represents is a set of tools that we can
use to pursue the truth. A vivid example of this
was provided when CBS News used some fake documents as evidence in
a story about US President George W. Bush. In the
past, no one might have noticed the fake documents, or if someone
did they would have had limited opportunities to share the
information. With the existence of the powerful
medium that is the Internet, however, the story about the fake
documents spread online, and CBS was forced to recall the
story.
The increase in the number of sources of information can make life seem more overwhelming, and it can make us feel more confused about what to believe. In the end, however, access to
information empowers individuals to learn more about issues and
make more accurate decisions about what is true and what is
not.
