Brazilian Film Festival in the Shanghai Film Festival

Last night, Consul General Joao de Mendonca Lima Neto(若奥·德·门东萨·利马·内托) of Brazil gave a fantastic dinner at the Garden Hotel in shanghai and Shanghai A list came out. including Joan Chen, designer Han Feng, Qin Yi, Nora Sun.   Here  are some pictures.  i am sure you recognize them.

Joao is one of the most beloved Consul Generals in Shanghai (he has a beard) and is a specially close friend of mine.  He is smart, hardworking, fun loving, kind, generous and has a beautiful Japanese wife by the name of Yoko.  We see each other a lot in Shanghai.  He has worked very hard to bring 12 films from Brazil to share with the Chinese audiences.  One of the guests is Lucelia Santos, the famous TV actress that appeared in a popular series in China as 女奴 in the 80's.

Last night, I also met a lot of interesting people like Mr. Lv Jiulong(吕九龙), Chairman of the Shanghai KFC.  Also, another extraordinary person I never met before is  in fact  the one that sponsored the dinner for  260 people. He was seated next to me and his name is  Mr. Qiu Ji Bao(邱继宝), President of Feiyue Group(飞跃集团), the largest maker of sewing machines in the world. ( www.feiyuegroup.com He started with sewing shoes to make some money when he was young.  Now he sells all kinds of sewing machines for all kinds of things in over 144 countries.(don't only think clothes!)  What a great story!  He told me that he started doing business in Brazil 20 years ago and today, he has a big headquarter there.  What vision, what foresight!  This is one of the reasons I love China.  it is so energetic, created by giants like Mr. Qiu.

Let us go back into history a little

You know, I filmed Brazil in the 80's for my show on CCTV.  it was a 6 part series filmed all over Brazil and it was the first time Chinese audience ever saw Brazil!    I went to Brazilia, the Capital in the middle of the country to interview President Sarney, the south to  Bahia to film some traditional Brazilian rituals, the Carnival Samba Schools (you know Brazil is famous for its Carnival which is really  run by the Samba Schools between which there are very fierce competitions)  Sau Paulo where it is the 2nd largest concentration of Japanese outside of Japan while our Chinese population is rather large too. Rio De Janiero (the River of January) has the world famous beach Ipanema (remember the song?  the Girl from Ipanema. Yes, indeed the girls from Ipanema are absolutely gorgeous. ) They wear the skinniest bikinis to show off their wonderful bodies.  It is a very beautiful country with beautiful people.

You know Brazil is huge!  Even though I took 3 TV crews to Brazil and did a lot of pre-production work, we did not touch Brazil completely.  One day I would like to go to Brazil to do 2 things I have never done:  1.  for New Year.  There is a custom that you  wear white and go into the sea for the sun rise.  Imagine how beautiful it can be...with thousands of people doing that.  It is a gorgeous sight and tradition.  2.  i would like to one day also visit the Amazon Forest.  It is the most natural forest in existence today.

One of the biggest compliments I ever received was what the former Vice Premier Tian Ji Yun(田纪云) said to me....He said that before he went on an official visit to Brazil in 1988, he asked CCTV to send him the 6 parts of TV shows I filmed on Brazil and used them as study material.
