Magic School
Magic School Bus,
How Wu Song killed a tiger),
Nearly
2000 years ago, there were three kingdoms in China. To the north of
Yangtze River was Wei Guo. To the south of Yangtze River were Shu
Guo and Wu Guo. They often fought against each other.
One day,
Cao Cao, the general of Wei Guo, led a fleet of wooden warships to
attack Wu Guo. Zhou Yu, the general of Wu Guo, led his soldiers to
fight back. Zhuge Liang, a clever man from Shu Guo, came to help Wu
Guo. Zhuge Liang, also known as Kong Ming, was
considered to be the cleverest man at that time. Do you remember
the Kong Ming lights that you saw during Spring Festival? It was
invented by Zhuge Liang, or Kong Ming.
The two troops fought
against each other for many days. They needed to shoot a lot of
arrows against each other when they were fighting on the river.
Soon Wu Guo was running low on arrows. General Zhou Yu asked Zhuge
Liang whether he could make 100,000 arrows in ten days. Zhuge Liang
smiled and said, "Three days will be enough."
"Make
100,000 arrows in three days? That's impossible!" Zhou Yu said.
"What if you can't make them in three days?" Zhuge Liang said he
would receive any punishment if couldn't do
that.
Zhou Yu
had been very jealous of Zhuge Liang. He thought that it would be a
good chance to shame Zhuge Liang.
Zhou Yu
sent a spy to see how Zhuge Liang made the arrows.
On the first day, the spy reported to Zhou Yu that Zhuge Liang
hadn't made a single arrow. On the second day, the spy said Zhuge
Liang idled the whole day away again. Zhou Yu said, "Zhuge Liang is
sure to be punished this time."
In the
second evening, Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to make many straw
soldiers and lined them along the two sides
of some boats.
The third
morning was a foggy day. There was thick fog on the Yangtze River.
Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to sail the boats towards Cao
Cao's army.
The
lookout in Cao's army spotted Zhuge Liang's boats coming towards
them. He thought it was an attack from Wu Guo, and sounded the
alarm. Through the thick fog, Cao Cao couldn't see
clearly how many boats were coming and how many
soldiers were on the boats. He commanded his men to shoot arrows
against the boats.
The
arrows landed on the straw soldiers and got stuck there. Soon the
straw soldiers on one side of the boats were
covered with arrows. The boats tilted to one side,
as the arrows made this side heavier. It seemed that the boats were
going to turn over and sink. Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to
turn the boats around. After a while, the straw soldiers on the
other side were covered with arrows, too.
The sun
came out, and the fog faded away. Cao Cao found that they had been
shooting arrows at straw soldiers. He was furious that he had been
tricked by Zhuge Liang!
Zhuge
Liang called out to his soldiers, "Full speed home!"
When
they went ashore, they counted the arrows. There
were more than 100,000 arrows on the straw soldiers!
The spy
reported all these to Zhou Yu. Zhou Yu sighed, "Zhuge Liang is
really cleverer than I."
