纳木错湖位于拉萨市当雄县和那曲地区的班戈县之间，离拉萨市约260公里，离当雄县城约60公里，湖面海拔4718米。从湖东岸到西岸全长70多公里，由南岸到北岸30多公里，湖面面积为1940平方公里，是国内除青海湖外的第二大咸水湖，也是世界上海拔最高的咸水湖，湖水最深处超过33米。它的北面依偎着和缓连绵的高原丘陵，东南面是直插云霄、终年积雪的念青唐古拉山的主峰，一望无际的草原环绕湖水的四周。千里湖面象一面巨大的宝镜，镶嵌在藏北草原上。

　　“纳木错”意为天湖，是藏传佛教的著名圣地。她和阿里神山下的玛旁雍措湖、日喀则岗巴拉山下的羊卓雍措湖并称为西藏三大圣湖。
