王国栋教授《深层英语语法》里有以下谬论：“用 on 表示接壤或相邻关系”： Mongolia is on the north of China. 蒙古在中国的北方。(二者边界线接壤用 on, 表示相邻关系)。”还有其他中国英语专家也持此谬说。

中国很多英语老师都大讲特讲过on the south of 和 to the south of 的区别，所谓有接壤用on，无接壤用to。这说法根本就是错误的。网络上也充斥着这个谬论。比如这个链接：

这种谬论还在中国英语界大肆流行。最担心的是，不知道哪一天哪一位命题老师还会用on the south of 和 to the south of 来让考生选择，而且还把错误答案当成正确答案！

Mexico is to the south of the USA.
这个句子我第一次见到是在《牛津高级英语学习者词典》（OALD)第2版（1963，香港）。
国内的《新英汉词典》收录了这个句子

Mexico is to the south of the USA.

又自己编了个：

The Democratic Republic of Viet Nam is on the south of China.

中国英语界普遍选择性地忽略牛津词典原句，普遍坚持错误，坚持认为要表示接壤，就用"is/lies on the south of" 这样的结构：Mexico is/lies on the south of the USA.(墨西哥位于美国的南面。）我曾经在英国的usingenglish.com 论坛上的 ASK A TEACHER 栏目里问了这个句子，英美澳加的英语老师们异口同声反对使用 Mexico is/lies on the south of the USA.这样的结构和句子。他们说必须用这个表达方式：Mexico is/lies (to the) south of the USA. 而实际上 Mexico is/lies  to the south of the USA.这个句子就只收录在《牛津高级英语学习者词典》（即引进中国的《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》）第1和第2版里。此后的版本把这个句子删除了。 

我搜索了英美语料库，发现：实际上，is/lies on the south of 这个结构，在19世纪及以前也只是极为偶尔被使用，20世纪到现在在英国和美国都没有人使用了。

《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》（OALD)原来的第1、第2版里的 Mexico is to the south of the USA .  这个表达法是正确的，但是这个表达法现在也很少用了，所以后来的第3/4/5/6/7/8版都删除原来那个句子。

如果非要用 on 表示接壤必须使用其他动词如bound和border的相关结构：

Germany is bounded on the west by France and on the south by Switzerland. 德国西面与法国接壤, 南与瑞士为邻。

下面句子来自张道真《高级英语词典》，句子后面的括号内是所引用的工具书：

Germany borders on France.  (Times Chambers)
It is bordered on the west by Iran. (Modern Century Illustrated Ecyclopedia)
It is bordered by Pakistan to the east. (Modern Century Illustrated Ecyclopedia)
The Pacific Ocean borders China on the west.(Modern Century Illustrated Ecyclopedia)


最正确而且最简洁的表达方式如：LONGMAN PHOTO DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN ENGLISH 《朗文美语图片词典》:

--Where is Kansas?
--It's south of Nebraska and north of Oklahoma.

这3个州从北到南，彼此接壤：
Nebraska
Kansas
Oklahoma

我曾经在美国当代语料库 [url=http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/]http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/[/url]里搜索的结果：
is on the north/south/east/west of    0个结果
is to the north/south/east/west of    6个结果
is north/south/east/west of           113个结果

可见在实际使用中，lies/is to the north/ south/ east/ west of 也很少用，所以牛津词典2版后的各版删除了该句。最常用的是朗文图片词典的句型：
is/lies north/south/east/west of

下面这个句子是正确的，但是它与表示“接壤”与否这个话题无关了：

The farmhouse is/lies on the south of the river.

农舍在河的南岸上/河的南面。
