粉墙、黑瓦、马头墙、砖木石雕以及层楼叠院、高脊飞檐、曲径回廊、亭台楼榭等的和谐组合，是徽派建筑的基调。宏村的民居、书院和祠堂可以说是徽派建筑的代表作。在宏村，村中数百幢古民居鳞次栉比，建筑组群比较完整。各类建筑都注重雕饰，木雕、砖雕和石雕等细腻精美，具有极高的艺术价值。参观宏村犹如在参观一个徽派建筑博物馆。

    宏村有一处被誉为“民间故宫”的“承志堂”，是黟县保护最完美的古民居，其正厅横梁、斗拱、花门、窗棂上的木刻，工艺精细、层次繁复、精雕细镂、飞金重彩、人物众多，人不同面，面不同神，堪称徽派“四雕”艺术中的木雕精品。
