至于《重修玉清宫碑铭》的立碑背景,早在清乾隆间，知县郑板桥与邑人韩亮德捐资倡修潍县玉清宫时，就请好友胡征君撰写了《重修玉清宫碑铭》，可是没等到上石，郑板桥就去官南归，立碑之事只得搁浅。清光绪二十二年，潍邑名士郭熏之、高鸿裁、丁毓庚等二十人缅怀前贤，收集佚闻，大倡立碑，他们找到了当时正在京师詹事府任左春坊赞善的曹鸿勋，请其书写胡征君的《重修玉清宫碑铭》并为之记。完成后，人们便选石、摹勒、刻字，立在玉清宫玉皇殿侧。

曹鸿勋在书写四面碑时是很下了一番功夫的，四面碑正文为欧体，共2500余字,字字苍劲俊秀，实为潍邑书法一绝，一时间潍人争相摹写，到玉清宫拓碑者四时不绝。千百年来，玉清宫几经兴衰，到解放前已是末世光景。潍县战役前，国民党军占领玉清宫，动用民夫，大兴土木，玉清宫内一片颓然，往景不复，但四面碑犹存。1959年，玉清宫原址建为潍坊市聋哑学校。及至文革期间，四面碑终被毁于一旦。
