Most of the college students who do part-time jobs are not very selective. They just do whatever job they could lay their hands on. Many of the jobs they do are low-paying, and time consuming. Thought college students should not be encouraged to be choosy in the competitive world of today, it is still advisable to consider several factors before they accept a job.

There are three main reasons why college students do part-time jobs. The perimary reason, we believe, is money. Faced with the pressure of rising prices of living necessities, most students find it necessary to find part-time jobs so as to cover the increasingly higher college costs. Some students hope to economically independent, because they come from remote countryside and feel it their responsibility to help relieve their parents' burden. More important is that students want to gain some social experiences, which are necessary to prepare them for future career.

A part-time job offers you a chance to demonstrate your ability and to apply what you have learned in school. A part-time job helps you become more independent of your family. Thirdly, the experience that you gain through job can broaden you school life. You may lose time needed for sleep, rest, study, club activities, and recreation. Working several hours a day consumes a lot of time and energy and affect study. You may find it hard to adjust to what the school expects from you as well as what employer has the right to expect.

A part-time job is like a coin. On the one side, it enables us to enjoy more independence; on the other, it may interfere with our study. However, we don,t stop eating for fear of being suffocated, do we? So we should continue our part-time job pursuit, only that we should be more careful in balancing our work and study. Make sure enough time is set aside for our readings and homework. Remember to get sufficient rest for us to keep healthy and energetic. And one more suggestion, we should never overwork ourselves.
