Am I a 'conscious being'? Are you? We'd both like to say yes, but we'd have to concede that not everything we do is intentional or aware. We can, though, recognise ourselves in a mirror. This, some say, is 'the best test'. But is it? It rules out dogs, babies and blind people. The fact is, we are not very conscious of consciousness. We just arrogantly assume that we're the only beings who have any! My friend Greg Sams, though, argues that any search for 'intelligent life' in space should begin with a deeper understanding of what intelligence actually is.

You are worried about the well-being of someone in your immediate circle who would now seem to be doing something silly - or suffering from problems which are most unfair. Naturally, you want to help and protect them. In doing so, though, you must deal with a wider world, full of further mistakes and deeper injustices. Imagine please, that you are starving hungry, in the middle of a jungle, and you come across a sack. Inside it, you find some golden coins and a bunch of ripe bananas. Which are you going to be more pleased to see? Or you are thirsty in the desert. You find a diamond ring and a bottle of water. If you can only have one, which will you take? Our priorities, in life, are largely dictated by our circumstances. There are, though, some things that will always have value. Put those first and you will have true wealth.

设想一下，在丛林中你饥肠辘辘，碰巧看到有个袋子。在袋子里有一些金币和一串成熟的香蕉。你更乐意看到哪个？又或者当你在沙漠中口干舌燥。却发现一枚钻石戒指和一瓶水，你只能取其一，你会如何选择？在生活中我们以什么为优先，在很大程度上取决于我们的环境。那即是说，有些东西将永远有价值。把这些事物放在首位，你将变得真正的富有。

In one area of your world at least, you know the score - and you can very safely hitch your wagon to a particular horse. Why then sit and wonder about the 'also-rans'? You know, in advance, what the result of one crucial situation is going to be. Give all you've got to the only cause that's worth supporting... and prepare for victory!
