斯蒂芬·霍金（Stephen Hawking）是一位世界著名的物理学家，《时间简史》的作者，于2018年3月14日在剑桥的家中安详逝世，享年76岁。

他1942年1月8日出生在英国的牛津。8岁时，他家搬到了圣奥尔本斯（St Albans），这是伦敦北边约20英里外的一个小镇。11岁时，霍金上了圣奥尔本斯学校。1950年他上了牛津的大学学院（University College, Oxford），他父亲曾经读书过的。尽管他父亲希望他学医学，但他却想要学数学。当时，大学学院并未开设数学（available），他就学了物理。三年后，没有费什么劲，他就获得自然科学一等荣誉学士学位。

Professor Stephen Hawking, who is the world-famous British physicist and author of A Brief History of Time, died peacefully at home in Cambridge on March 14, 2018, at the age of 76.

Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England. When he was eight, his family moved to St Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At eleven Stephen went to St Albans School. In 1950, at the age 17, he enrolled into the Oxford University, his father’s old college. Stephen wanted to do Mathematics, although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was not available at University College, so he did Physics instead. After three years and not very much work he was awarded a first class honours degree in Natural Science.

Hawking had a bad illness that stopped him from moving or talking. Hawking made so many great achievements that he has received many awards and prizes for his work over the years. This includes winning the Albert Einstein Award. It is the highest achievement in theoretical physics.
