Part C Retelling Tapescript:

Fear of the Dark Mary was terrified of the dark. When the lights were off at night, everything in her bedroom looked like terrible things. Many times her parents explained that people could not see clearly in the dark, so everything became strange. But Mary still had an awful feeling of fear in the dark. One day, her aunt came for a visit. She was famous for her courage and for her many adventures. Mary asked her aunt for help to overcome her fear. Her aunt told Mary a secret: when you are afraid of the things in your bedroom, close your eyes and touch them with your hands. You’ll know there is nothing to be afraid of. That night, Mary turned off the light. After a while, she felt afraid of the things in the bedroom again. Following her aunt’s advice, she closed her eyes, gathering all her courage. She then moved forward and touched something soft. Her big smile appeared on Mary’s face. She realized that it was her favorite toy bear. Excited, Mary touched everything in her room with her eyes closed. All the things that seemed terrible were actually her toys. Mary was not afraid of the dark anymore.

参考复述: Mary was afraid of the dark. When she looked around when the lights were off, she seemed to see all kinds of scary things. Her parents said she shouldn’t be afraid, but their advice didn’t help her. Then one day her aunt visited. Her aunt was famous for her adventures and bravery, so Mary was eager to talk with her. Her aunt told Mary that she should just touch whatever was scaring her. Then she’d see there is nothing to be scared of. That night, Mary tried it. She saw something scary, but when she touched it, she found it was only her favorite toy bear. She felt happy, and touched everything else in her room. They all turned out to be toys. After that, she wasn’t afraid of the dark anymore.

Part C Retelling Tapescript: Surprise
Tom’s birthday was approaching. His wife Mary wanted to give him a present, but she wanted it to be a surprise, so she had to keep everything a secret. But she had a problem: how could she find out what he wanted for his birthday. Soon, she got an idea and decided to ask Tom’s sister for help. His sister would telephone him and ask him what he would like to receive and Mary would listen to the conversation without Tom knowing it. Everything went smoothly as planned. Mary listened carefully from the other room and finally heard what Tom wanted — a pair of sneakers. Full of excitement, she rushed off to the shop and bought a pair of shiny sneakers. Finally the day arrived. Mary brought in the box of sneakers packed in colorful paper. “Wow,” Tom said with a big smile, “I wonder what it can be.” “Open it and see for yourself,” Mary replied happily. Tom opened the box but did not seem that happy. Mary noticed that something was wrong. “Didn’t you tell your sister that you wanted a pair of sneakers?” she asked. “A pair of sneakers?” Tom started to laugh, “I said a pair of speakers.”
参考复述: Mary wanted to buy a birthday present for her husband Tom, but she wanted to surprise him. So instead of asking him directly, she asked Tom’s sister to phone him and ask him what he wanted for his birthday. Then, she could listen to the conversation from the next room. While they were talking, she heard Tom say he wanted a pair of sneakers. Soon after, Mary went to a shop and bought a pair of nice new sneakers for him. When Tom’s birthday arrived, Mary gave him the present. Tom opened the package, and looked at the shoes, but he didn’t seem very excited. Mary asked him what was wrong. She said she thought he had wanted a pair of sneakers. Tom laughed. He said that actually, he’d wanted a pair of speakers.

Part C Retelling Tapescript: Mary’s Invitation
Mary was seven years old. She was often left alone at home by her parents, so she wanted to have someone to talk to. Mary loved to play with the phone in the living room. Beside the phone was a list of names with phone numbers. One day, Mary tried to call the first number on the list. A familiar voice came from the phone. That was one of her mother’s best friends. Mary was greatly excited and invited her to dinner. After the first call, she phoned everyone on the list inviting all of them to dinner. Mary’s parents returned home and found their living room full of friends. Too late to prepare dinner, they started ordering food for the guests. When the father and mother finally had time to talk to each other, they found out that neither of them had invited the guests. Then Mary said proudly, “It’s my party. I invited them all by phone.” All the guests laughed. They were surprised that little Mary held a big dinner party by herself. Before leaving, each guest thanked Mary and invited her to their home. Now little Mary had many people to talk to.
参考复述: There was a seven-year-old girl named Mary. Her parents were usually out of the house, so she often felt lonely. One day, she noticed there was a list of names and phone numbers next to the phone in the living room. So she picked up the phone and dialed the first number. It was one of her mother’s friends, and Mary was excited. Mary invited her mother’s friend for dinner. Then she phoned everyone on the list and invited each one for dinner as well. When Mary’s parents got home, they were surprised to find all their friends there. It was too late to cook, so Mary’s parents ordered food for their friends. Then Mary proudly told them she’d wanted a party and had invited everyone. All the guests thought it was funny, and they all thanked Mary before leaving and inviting her to their home. So Mary had lots of people she could talk to.

The Pet Shop
Tom and Mary always wanted a dog and finally their parents agreed. So the kids went to the local pet shop and had a look around. It was a very small shop that didn’t have many pets. The shop owner said that there were only two dogs to choose from, one was a big black dog, and the other was a tiny white one. Tom wanted the big dog, while Mary preferred the tiny one. They couldn’t persuade each other. Mary suggested they race home and the winner could choose the dog. Tom agreed, but he wanted to win the race so much that he played a trick on Mary. “Look at your shoes,” Tom said. When Mary looked down, he ran off and got a head start. He ran as fast as he could. And soon Mary was left far behind. Finally, Tom got home and Mary arrived a few minutes later. “It was unfair!” she shouted angrily. So they decided to race back to the shop. However, when they arrived, they couldn’t see the dogs. They asked the owner where the dogs were. The owner explained that a few minutes after they left, a man walked in and bought the two dogs. 参考复述: Tom and Mary’s parents said they could have a dog. They were very happy and went to their neighborhood pet shop. But it was small, and there were only two dogs. One was big and black, and the other was small and white. Tom wanted the black one, and Mary wanted the white one. They couldn’t convince each other, so they decided to race home to decide who’d choose the dog. But before the race started, Tom told Mary to look at her shoes. When she looked down, he quickly ran ahead. So he got home first, but Mary said the race had been unfair. Then they agreed to have a race back to the pet store. But when they got there, the dogs were gone. The pet shop manager told them that a man had come while they were gone and had bought both of the dogs.

Part C Retelling Tapescript: Where is My Money?
Tom is very careless with money. He often forgets his money in his desk drawer at school or even finds that his pet dog has eaten his bank notes. Accidents still happen. One day, Tom gave his mother an old pair of trousers to wash and went into the study to read. His mother would usually go through his pockets before washing his clothes, but for some reason, she failed to do so this time. As he was reading, Tom suddenly remembered that there was a ten-pound note in one of the pockets of the trousers. He dropped his book and rushed into the bathroom. “Mum, you didn’t put my trousers into the washing-machine, did you?” he asked. But it was too late. His mother told him that his trousers had been in the machine for 20 minutes already. Tom stopped the machine and pulled out his trousers as quickly as possible. He went through all the pockets looking for the note. At last, he managed to find the ten-pound note that had turned into a white piece of paper. To his great disappointment, the note had lost its color and might not be of any use.
参考复述: Tom is very forgetful and careless with his money. He often forgets his money at school, or finds that his dog has eaten some of his cash. One day, his mother was washing some of Tom’s clothes. She usually checks his trouser pockets before putting them in the washing machine, but this time she forgot. Tom was reading in another room, when suddenly he remembered he’d had a ten-pound note in his trouser pockets. He quickly ran to his mother and asked her if she’d put his trousers in the machine. She said she had put them in about twenty minutes before. Tom went to the machine and took his trousers out. He finally found the ten-pound note in the pocket of his trousers, but it had lost its color and looked like a piece of white paper. Tom was very disappointed.
