Gary Strieker, a CNN veteran who covered a lot
of African conflicts with his Nairobi bureau crew, gave an warmly
welcome speech today on CUC campus. Mr. Strieker stressed a lot on
the balance of news stories, which means we should hear from every
parties that invovle the incident.
After leaving Africa, Mr. Strieker started his
evironmental coverage life. He's been to China, Malaysia, Cameroon
and many other countries. Coverage relates dams, rain forrests,
animals, industrial construction and so on. Mr. Strieker gave some
great comments on China's press. He said: "Freedom of press in
China is much better than some other countries. In African
countries, officials actually see through our cameras after we set
up. I was expecting that before coming to China, but it didn't
happen." However, in Mr. Strieker's two documentaries about China's
great Three Gorges Project, there are no negative quotes from local
citizens or farmers. Mr. Strieker said it's because they were
companied with offcials. This reflects we still need improvements.
Mr. Strieker also found it hard to interview offcials in China,
even through FAO.
Students all enjoyed the speech and looked
forward to more.
