关山月                         The Moon Over the Guanshan Pass

明月出天山，Rising from the Snow Mountain is the bright moon

苍茫云海间。cloaked in the vast and wide cloak of cloud Neptune.

长风几万里，A breath of blast from thousands of miles away

吹度玉门关。blows gently through the Yumen Pass all the way.

汉下白登道，Warred at Mount. Baideng the first monarch of Han.

胡窥青海湾。Upon Qinghai spied the barbarian Hu clan.

由来征战地，These places have been fields of battle from days of yore,

不见有人还。No one comes back alive from any a war.

戍客望边色，Viewing the border and the back of beyond

思归多苦颜。his garrison face’s love-yearning sorrow donned.

高楼当此夜，”On this misty moonlit night in her room high

叹息未应闲。she must be moaning with many a sore sigh.”
