What happened to the amber room?

Part A: Hans Braun’s story

Hello. I’m Hans Braun, an old German sailor. During the war my ship was at Konigsberg. One night I was told to help our soldiers put some big wooden boxes onto my ship. They were very heavy and the soldiers said they were full of treasure. The ship went out to sea. On our voyage, our ship was attacked and sank. Almost everyone died. I had to swim three kilometers before I was saved by a German ship. Nobody had time to save the boxes. They must still be buried in the sand. Now a group of people who are searching for the Amber Room have asked me to help them find the ship.

Part B: Anna Petrov’s story

Hello, my name is Anna Petrov. I was a maid at the castle in Konigsberg between 1940 and 1945. One night in 1941 many trucks came to the castle with large boxes. The German soldiers took the boxes into the castle. Later we heard that a special art treasure in the castle was shown to important visitors. Perhaps it was the Amber Room but I never saw it. Then at the end of August, 1944, I heard something explode. When I looked outside I saw that the castle was on fire. The next morning I found some melted pieces of something that looked like honey. Russian soldiers later told me it was amber and it could have come from the Amber Room.

HOW ABU SIMBEL WAS SAVED?

Part A

The Aswan High Dam in Egypt is one of the biggest dams in the world. It provides half of Egypt’s electricity. However, it caused problems while it was being built. There were many temples along the River Nile. It was clear that when the dam was finished many of them would be covered by water. One of the most important of these temples is Abu Simbel, which was built in the 13th century BC. It is made of rock and at the entrance there are four large stone persons, each twenty metres high. Nobody wanted the beautiful temple of Abu Simbel to disappear but they needed the dam. Finally, the engineers of UNESCO studied the problem and found a way to rescue the temple.

Part B

The engineers agreed to move Abu Simbel temple stone by stone and built it again above the waters of the dam. It took 1,900 workers four years to rebuild the temple in the 1960s. It cost more than seventy million US dollars. However, it was worth it. The Aswan High Dam was finished in 1966. Ever since then Abu Simbel has been one of the most beautiful temples in Egypt. It is still in a quiet and beautiful place which visitors are glad to visit.

Visiting the Forbidden City

Wen Hui is going to take her friend, Sally Jones, to visit the Forbidden City in Beijing. (Sally Jones= S; Wen Hui =W)

Part A

S: Oh, Wen Hui, I’ve always wanted to see the Forbidden City. It sounds so exciting. I wonder why it’s called that?

W: It was because ordinary people like us, were never allowed into the Palace while the emperors ruled China.

S: So who was allowed in?

W: Well. The Emperor’s family, high state officials and servants of the emperor.

S: Mmm, I’ve heard that it’s one of the largest palaces in the world. How big is it?

W: Well, there were 9,999 rooms when it was built.

S: 9,999 rooms! That’s so strange! Why not 10,000?

W: There are two reasons. First, nine is a special number in Chinese culture. Second, it’s said that the Emperor in Heaven has 10,000 rooms so the Emperor on Earth can not have so many. It wouldn’t show respect.

S: Oh, I see…

Part B

S: How many Emperors lived there altogether?

W: Fourteen Emperors from the Ming Dynasty and ten from the Qing Dynasty. They lived in it for about 500 years till the last Emperor left it in 1924.

S: So I think it was built in the fifteenth century.

W: Oh, yes. After it was finished, the capital of China moved to Beijing.

S: Mmm, I read it in the newspaper that the Palace is repaired and redecorated very often.

W: Yes, there is now a programme of repairs going on. It will last until 2020.

S: Goodness! Oh, is that because the palace is made of wood? You know, we also repair our castles in England, but they don’t take so long because the castles are made of stone.

W: Yes, I suppose so. Wooden structures need more work to protect them.

S: But that’s one of the reasons why it’s so special! I’ve heard that it’s made of wood without even one nail.

W: Yes, it’s a great example of ancient Chinese architecture and it’s now a national museum. It is also called the Palace Museum…

So the next day Hippomenes was waiting when Atlanta came out. She thought, "I don't want this man to die." So she said to her father, "Tell him to go away. The race will not be run today." But Hippomenes said,
"These are her rules: she will marry the man who runs faster than her. Come on-- let's run!"
When the race started Hippomenes ran fast, but Atlanta ran even faster. Soon she was in front. At once Hippomenes threw one of the golden
apples. It fell far to the side of Atlanta and she ran to get it. As she picked it up, she saw Hippomenes was in front. So she ran very fast until she ws in front again. Just then Hippomenes threw another apple over her head and far to the side. Again she stopped
to pick it up, and Hippomenes went in front.
When she finally caught up with Hippomenes the second time, he threw the third and last golden apple. As it flew through the air Atlanta saw it and wanted it. So she picked this one up too. By this time Hippomenes was almost at the end of the race. Atlanta could not catch up with him because the apples were too heavy. So Hippomenes won the race and married Atlanta. Thanks to the goddess they lived happily ever after.

PHIDIPPIDIES AND THE MARATHON

In the modern Olympic Games the longest running race is called the Marathon. It gets its name from a town in Greece called Marathon which is 26 miles from Athens, the capital city of Greece. This is the story of why the Marathon race is included in the Olympic Games.

Once there was an ancient Greek soldier called Phidippides. He ran so fast that he was often sent on long journeys with important messages. One day the leaders of Athens realized that their city was going to be attacked. They sent their army to the small town of Marathon, where they fought their enemies. It was a very long and hard battle, but at last the army from Athens won. They were very happy. However, they knew that the people of Athens would be wondering what had happened. So they asked Phidippides to go to Athens and tell them the good news.

Phidippides set off. He was very tired after all the fighting but he ran as fast as he could. As he got near Athens he began to slow down. His head was bursting and he could hardly breathe. As he got to the centre of the city, he fell to the ground. All the people rushed up to him. Phidippides opened his mouth. “ Athens is saved!” he cried. Then he fell down dead. His story became so famous that it is remembered by the Marathon race of 26 miles, which is the distance from Marathon to Athens.

A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE ANCIENT AND THE MODERN OLYMPICS

Hello! I’m the torch that lights the Olympic fir and starts every modern Olympic Games.

I always begin my journey from Olympia in Greece where the Ancient Games were first held. I’m usually lit by the sun there and carried by many runners from different countries. Many people come to watch as I travel through their countries to the host city. However, only the best athletes carry me!

It’s a great honour and many athletes hope to get the chance to do so. The greatest honour is to be the last athlete who carries me into the stadium where the Games will be held. The last athlete gets the opportunity to light the Olympic fire. That fire will burn for the whole period of the Games and will only be put

out when the Games end. I enjoy being part of so much sporting friendship. Two special sets of Olympics are held at the same time as the Summer Olympics. One is for people with physical difficulties and the other for those with learning difficulties. I am always happy to see athletes help each other and feel excited

when new countries get Olympic medals. It is a wonderful experience to be a bridge between the ancient and the modern Olympic Games. Long may the Olympics continue!

D: Hi, Laura. It’s good to see you because I’m so bored. My homework is about information Technology but I know everything there is to know about IT.

L: Come off it. Dave. I think I might know more than you.

D: OK. Let me test you! Here’s the first question. What’s information technology?

L: Gosh, that’s easy! It’s computers, of course.

D: Ah! That’s just where you’re wrong. It includes books, radio and TV as well.

L: Really! Well, I never.

D: Question number 2. Which is the most popular form of IT in the world?

L: Well, that must be computers this time.

D: No, it’s books. Think of all those people in developing countries without computers. Their only form of IT is books!

L: Oh dear! I’m not doing very well.

Part B

D: Here’s the third question. Which form of IT is the best for describing the skills of a sport

L: It must be the radio.

D: Actually, It’s not. The best descriptions are on the TV because you can not only hear the technical language, but also see how it happens.

L: Goodness! Wrong again!

D: Here’s the last question? Which form of IT has the most functions?

L: This time I must be right. It’s the computer, of course.

D: Yes. You can watch a film, replay a match, communicate with friends through the Internet, get information and find out what’s going on in the world.

L: Oh dear! Three questions wrong out of four. Perhaps I don’t know as much about IT as though I did!

Two androids

Their likes and dislikes

B: Hey, Sally, how are you today?

S: Oh, Brenda, I’ve been so busy and tired this week looking after the children. I wish my programmer would let me work in a factory like you.

B: No, you wouldn’t. It’s so boring. We aren’t allowed to talk while we work.

S: But at least you don’t have five children to run after every day. They’re so naughty.

B: But at least every day is different. I do the same thing for eight hours every day. I sometimes feel as I my arm is going to break.

S: Oh, Brenda, you make me laugh, you should like a real person. Come on. It’s a lovely day! Look at those flowers! They look so pretty!

B: I see people put them up to their noses. Why’s that?

S: They say that they’ve a wonderful smell, but I don’t know what that means.

B: Well, don’t cry again. It made your chips go funny last time. Just understand that we’ll never be able to laugh, tease, smell or eat food. But don’t feel sad! It’s a lovely day.

S: Yes, the weather is nice and I’ve been invited to join the other androids for a game of football. Would you like to come?

B: Yes, I would. Running after a ball is better than running after five children! Let’s go!

The story of the dodo

Once upon a time I lived on the island of Mauritius. I was called “dodo”. There were many of us and we were friends with all the other animals on the island. One day a new animal came to my island. His name was Man, and at first we seemed to be good friends. We went everywhere together and I shared my food with him. However I began to wonder why several of my dodo friends had disappeared. Then the number f out species began to decrease quickly. I was so worried that I asked the other animals and they all told me, “your friends are being killed and eaten by Man while you are hunting for food.” Had Man eaten them? I could not believe it! When I asked Man directly, he seemed surprised. “I haven’t seen the other dodos either.” He said. “Maybe someone else killed them”. I believed him but when more dodos disappeared I set a trap. I went off as if I was going to hunt but instead I hid in the forest and waited. Sure enough Man came along. He ran after the last of my dodo friends and killed her. I felt so angry that I rushed out of my hiding place and straight at Man’s spear(枪,矛)。He killed me too. After that there were no more dodos in the world. So my motto is :be careful who you trust.

ASK AUNTY GLADYS

Letter 1

Dear Aunty Gtadys,

I am very concerned about the environment, but I also like eating sea fish very much. I know some fish species are endangered by too much fishing, I also know that fishermen have to count the number of fish they catch. If they have too many of one species, they have to throw them back into the sea. Please tell me which fish I can eat without hurting any endangered species.

Yours,

Li Kun

ASK AUNTY GLADYS

Letter 2

Dear Aunty Gladys,

I am a Bengal tiger and I am very unhappy that so many people want to kill me. I am a quiet, kind-hearted animal and I like to live alone in my forest. The only animals I kill are those I am going to eat .I can't understand an animal like man who attacks me for no reason. I know I have a beautiful skin, but I am amazed that I should be killed for it. Now I find my habitat is getting smaller and smaller and I cannot miss metting man. I am frightened. What can I do?

Yours,

Bengi

Letter 3

Dear Aunty Gladys,

I am a young visitor from China. I am very interested in all the wonderful animals and plants you have in England. But I've noticed that you keep the best animals in zoos and the prettiest plants in parks. Why are the animals not running around freely in the wild and why are the plants not growing in forests?

Yours,

Zhao Jing

Saving wild birds

Part A: two problems

Hu Xiao is a senior high student who shows a great interest in wildlife protection. Today he has got a good chance to interview a volunteer, Alice Brown, from IBRRC.

HX: Hello Alice. I’m so interested in your work saving birds! What do you think is the most difficult part of your work?

AB: Well… I suppose it’s saving wild birds covered in oil. That’s the most difficult of all.

HX: How does that happen?

AB: The oil comes from boats. It floats on the water and covers the bird’s feathers when they swim through it.

HX: That sounds terrible. What do you do about it?

AB: The first thing we do is make sure the bird hasn’t eaten too much oil. When a bird’s covered in oil, it tries to clean itself with its beak. As it does so, the bird eats some oil and becomes sick.

HX: Oh dear! Do the birds always die?

AB: Sometimes…but we try to save them. Birds use their feathers like a raincoat to keep out cold water. When feathers are covered in oil, they stick together and a bird’s skin gets cold in the water. So without help the bird would die of cold!

Part B: the solution

HX: What do you do with those birds?

AB: First, we comfort a bird by feeding it and keeping it warm. Then we clean it. We rub the bird very carefully. We use warm water and a little soap and work quickly as the birds hate being touched.

HX: Is this a difficult job?

AB: Yes, because it’s very important to do the job quickly.

HX: What happens after that?

AB: The birds are kept warm and given a rest.

HX: I suppose after that they want to touch their feathers with their beaks.

AB: Yes, they do. Birds produce a natural oil in their tails and put this over their feathers until they feel better.

HX: Thank you. I’ve learned a lot.

AB: Not at all. It’s been my pleasure.

Freddy the frog dipped his long, thin legs into the water. Within a few short weeks he had changed from a small tadpole into the beautiful animal he was now. He smiled to himself. Then suddenly he heard a fine, deep sound that carried far into the darkness of the quiet night. Freddy looked up. “Other frogs! I must try and find them,” he thought. “It’s so hard being a grown-up frog on my own.”

He began to swim slowly towards the sound. Suddenly he knocked into a large lily pad. On it sat three confident frogs and they were playing instruments. Freddy climbed onto the leaf. “Can I sing with you?” he asked quietly. “Of course,” they said. He opened his mouth wide and began:

Help! I need somebody,

Help! Not just anybody.

Help! You know I need someone. Help!

When I was young and so much younger than today,

I never needed anybody’s help in any way.

But now these days are gone,

I’m not so self-assured.

Now I find – I’ve changed my mind,

I’ve opened up the doors.

(chorus)

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down.

And I do appreciate you being round.

Help me get my feet back on the ground.

Won’t you please, please help me!

The “MOZART EFFECT”

Do you worry about exams? Of course, everyone does. Do you find it difficult to remember what you study? Well, everybody has trouble remembering things form time to time. Do you know music can help you remember things better? Scientists have shown that if you listen to classical music and especially Mozart while you are studying, it helps your memory. It is called the “Mozart effect”.

It would be useful to know if the “Mozart effect” works with all kinds of music. Certainly scientists have done some experiments to find out. They have tried playing other kinds of music (such as pop music) while students are studying, but it doesn’t work. It seems that the regular rhythms of classical music help develop one’s memory. However, this improvement only lasts for a short time.

If you want to improve your intelligence, what should you do? Scientists think that learning a musical instrument is helpful, especially for improving maths skills. This is because maths and music both use the same part of the brain. So if you want to be good at maths, perhaps you should go to a music class!

III.  task in the workbook

The music of Bach

Classical music does not have words. It tries to describe feelings with musical instruments. It is called classical music because it was written at a time when there was no pop or rock music. The music was written to a special pattern. Only the cleverest composers could make beautiful music using this pattern.

One of these clever composers was Bach. He was not famous during his life, but became very famous after his death.

He worked in a small church and had to write new songs to sing every week. So he composed beautiful choral music. He also wrote music for people to listen to as they left the church. Some of his music is very mathematical with different parts that repeat each other in a very peaceful way. All his music was written for God and some of it is very moving. He never became rich but his music has a special place in classical music. He is remembered today for the beauty of his musical patterns. You can listen to one of his pieces of music now.
