我想大家都听说过“秋老虎”吧。
来个学术一点的解释：
秋老虎在气象学上是指三伏出伏（ending of the dog days）以后短期回热后的35℃以上的天气。
天气特征是早晚清凉、午后高温暴晒。
一般发生在8月至9月之间。所以说，“秋老虎”已经开始啦！
简单说呢，“秋老虎”就是：立秋后短期的回热天气。(a spell of hot weather after the Beginning of Autumn)
敲黑板：
spell这个词意思可多了。
除了熟知的动词意思“拼写；拼成”，还可以表示：
（特定天气的）一段持续时间
（疾病等的）一阵发作
一段工作时间，服务时间
符咒，咒语
魔力，魅力，诱惑力，吸引力
这里就用的是第一个意思，来个例句：
It looks as if we were in for a cold spell.
看样子要过一段寒潮天气。
要知道，“秋老虎”的英语可不是“autumn tiger”哦。
从字面意思来看，这个名词可以翻译成“scorching heat in early autumn”，也就是“早秋的酷热天气”，是不是很贴切呢。
敲黑板：

形容天气的话，意思就是“灼热的”；
形容说话语气，意思就是“尖刻的，讽刺的”。
如果要在英语口语里找到相对应的表达，那就是“Indian summer“咯。
它的意思可不是“印度的夏日”，而是指“天气冷了之后又忽然回暖”，引申义为愉快宁静的晚年。
对于Indian summer的原因，查到了一种解释：
“秋老虎”来袭的时候，烟雾笼罩，这为印第安人去袭击移民地区的人们提供了机会。
The smokey time commenced and lasted for a considerable number of days. This was the Indian summer, because it afforded the Indians another opportunity of visiting the settlements with their destructive warfare.
看一下维基百科给出的简单释义：
Indian summer is a period of unseasonably（不合时令地） warm, dry weather that sometimes occurs in autumn in the Northern Hemisphere（北半球）. The US National Weather Service（美国国家气象局） defines this as weather conditions that are sunny and clear with above normal temperatures, occurring late-September to mid-November（9月底到11月中旬）. It is usually described as occurring after a killing frost（严霜）.
天气情况暂时是无法精确预见的，所以人们会说：
Indian summer is a season which everyone looks forward to each year, but on whose exact arrival no two people usually agree.
每年人人都盼望秋季的小阳春天气，但这一季节什么时候到来可就人人说法不一了。
在德语（German）里，类似的天气情况被称为Altweibersommer，用英语说就是“old women's summer”。
秋老虎还可以翻译为“old wives'summer”，我觉得它就是来源于德语的说法。
在保加利亚（Bulgaria），它又被称为“gypsy summer”或者“poor man's summer”。
gypsy ['dʒɪpsi] 这个词既是名词也是形容词，表示“吉布赛人（的）”。
看来德国人和保加利亚对“秋老虎”很有意见嘛，
不是“old women's summer”就是“poor man's summer”。（不是“老女人”就是“穷人；可怜的人”！）
除了“秋老虎”，“倒春寒”也是一种有趣的天气现象。
“倒春寒”指的是初春（一般指3月）气温回升较快，而在春季后期（一般指4月或5月）气温较正常年份偏低的天气现象。（unusually cold spell in an otherwise warm early spring）
长期阴雨天气（cloudy and rainy weather）或频繁的冷空气（cold air）侵袭，或者持续冷高压（cold high）控制下晴朗夜晚的强辐射冷却易造成倒春寒。
用英语说就是：cold spell in later spring，比如：
There is always a cold spell in the later spring.
晚春时节通常会有倒春寒。
李清照《声声慢》里就有相应表达：乍暖还寒时候，最难将息。
这句话是说，天气突然转暖，却仍然寒意未消。变化无常的天气，最难保养休息。
杨宪益夫妇将这句翻译为：Even when it’s warmer there is still a chill. It is most difficult to keep well.
要知道的是，“秋老虎”和“倒春寒”来袭的时候，温差大，很容易感冒哈。
