1. Students will be able to get the main idea and details of the picture book by using different reading strategies and working in groups.

2. Students can guess the meaning of new words by reading the pictures and the context.

3. Students will be able to predict the development of the story according to the pictures and the context.

Students are encouraged to love their home and make their home warmer.

Teaching procedures

Step 1 Pre-reading

1. Lead in: Show the pictures of my home and talk with students about their homes freely.

2. Instruct students to look at the cover of the book.

3. Prediction: Encourage students to read the pictures first and guess what happens to Mr. Parrot.

(设计意图:通过free talk 激活学生已有的知识储备;教师通过引导学生读绘本图片并预测文本内容,锻炼学生的思维能力)

Step 2 While-reading

1. Observe the first two pictures of the book and ask students “ How is the house? How does Mr Parrot feel? Is he happy? Why? If you don’t like your house, what will you do?

2. Reading for the gist. Encourage students to read the book for the first time and get the main idea by answering two questions,“ Can he find a new house? How many places does he go?”

3. Work in groups of four and finish the map.

4. Ask students “where does Mr Parrot go at first?” “How is the place?” “Can he live there?”

5. Reading for specific information. Divide students into six groups. Instruct students to write down the characteristics of the places. Each group writes down the key words of one place.

6. Let’ think: What kind of home is suitable for Mr Parrot?

7. Let’s compare. Instruct students to look at the two pictures of Mr Parrot’s house. Ask students ,“ Are they the same house?” At first, it’s little and old. Now it’s warm and nice. Why?

8. Emotional education. How to make your home warmer?

设计意图:通过快速浏览故事梗概掌握泛读技能;通过定位关键文字、小组填写关键词等方式进一步细读;通过地图梳理脉络;通过对比之前和之后的房子引发学生深度思考;通过交流“如何使自己的家变得更温暖”这一话题对学生进行情感教育。

 

Step 3 Post-reading

1. Enjoy the book and give the book a name.

2. Let’s think: What kind of home do you think is best?

3. What have you learned from the book?

设计意图:故事学习后,引导学生欣赏故事并通过给故事命名培养学生的概括能力;引导学生基于“什么样的家是最好的?”这一问题进行深度思考。

 

Step 4 Homework

1.  Create your own page of the book.

2.  Try to do something to make your home warmer.
