Edith Jacobson (1897-1978), the
renowed psychoanalysist, had impressed me not for her theory on
"self and object world", but for her exceptional courage,
conscience and professionalism.
The most legendary part of her
life could be traced on the web.
"...... During the 1930s she
was imprisoned by the Nazis because she refused to divulge
information about a patient (Kronold, Edward, 1979).
In 1941 she emigrated to the
United States of America......"
(Quoted from International
Dictionary of Psychoanalysis.)
I remember that three years
ago, how admiring Mr. Zhou was, when he first told us the story in
the class.
He concluded with awe, "Such a
lady! She stuck to the counseling ethics, in the face of
death!"
I nodded, with heartfelt
respect.
