乔治·格什温（George
Gershwin，1898-1937）美国作曲家。他是美国第一位民族作曲家。在他短暂的一生中，只留下为数不多的管弦乐作品，但他却创立了美国所独具的音乐风格，成为美国民族音乐的奠基人。
格什温音乐的基本格调当然是美国的；鲜明的爵士乐和拉格泰姆的情调格什温在童年时代就已经熟悉了。但是在格什温的音乐中俄罗斯-犹太风格也许几乎是同样强烈的。这方面表现在经常使用古老的教会调式——这些调式的移植是十分罕见的。各种影响结合得如此绝妙，就好像是一次完成的，但它也许可以部分地解释这种一次性的现象：乔治·格什温。
