柴科夫斯基《雪姑娘》歌剧配乐，作品12，作于1873年。雪姑娘是俄罗斯民间传说的一位童话角色，她是俄罗斯版的圣诞老人——严寒老人的孙女和助手，与严寒老人一起为人们送去新年祝福。

《雪姑娘》的形象不仅出现在俄罗斯民间仪式中，在俄罗斯的口头文学创作中也以民间童话中提到的：“用雪堆造，并且复活”的形象呈现。她被描绘为冰雪与春天之女儿。故事里她喜欢上了一名牧羊人，但作为冰雪的化身她又不懂情为何物。雪姑娘的母亲同情她的处境于是给予了她这个能力，当雪姑娘堕入爱河之时她的内心越发温暖，但同时她的身体因此熔化而消失了。

俄国剧作家亚历山大·奥斯特洛夫斯基，受阿法纳西耶夫思想的影响创作了剧本《雪姑娘》，由柴科夫斯基配乐于1873年公演。剧本中，雪姑娘是以雪老人和春天的女儿的身份出现的。不幸的是雪姑娘在夏天对丰收神雅利洛的敬拜仪式上死去。雪姑娘的造型被描绘得清纯秀美，描述中她具有苍白而令人怜悯的面庞，雪白的头发。她总是穿着白蓝相间并以毛皮镶边的斗蓬（皮大衣、毛皮帽子、手套）。但是起初该剧本并没有被观众所认可。
