1982年，时值历史悠久的柏林爱乐管弦乐团成立百周年，那年从柏林、萨尔兹堡至纽约，皆可以看见首席指挥卡拉扬与乐团演出马勒「第九号交响曲」的精采身影，卡拉扬曾如此形容这伟大的作品：「这音乐来自另一个世界，它来自于永恆。」
