这张专辑是大提琴家斯塔克与日本钢琴家练木繁夫合作，演奏20首大卫·波帕尔的大提琴作品。斯塔克的演奏浪漫、迷人，优美而不滥情，炫技之外还有点沙龙气息，波帕尔简直就是大提琴上的萨拉萨蒂。Delos的录音非常出色，大提琴的音色深沉而柔润，泛着浓郁的松香味。
大卫·波帕尔(David
Popper，1843-1913)，捷克作曲家、大提琴家。1843年6月18日出生于布拉格，3岁就能模仿父亲所唱的圣诗，5岁能即兴弹奏钢琴，6岁开始学小提琴，12岁进入布拉格音乐学院，随戈尔特曼（J.
Goltermann）学习大提琴。21岁应邀在比洛（Bulow）的指挥下演奏，深受称赞。25岁起担任帝国歌剧院交响乐团首席大提琴。演奏之外他开始创作，至1880年已经出版了60部作品。后受李斯特邀请，在布达佩斯的匈牙利皇家音乐院担任第一位大提琴教授。他与学校教师组成布达佩斯弦乐四重奏，曾与勃拉姆斯合作演奏。当时学校共事者有作曲家多赫纳尼（E.
Dohnanyi）、巴托克、科达伊及指挥家赖纳等。1913年获得奥匈帝国国王的奖励。同年8月7日逝世于维也纳附近的巴登（Baden）。
波帕尔创作了四首大提琴协奏曲，一首三把大提琴与钢琴的安魂曲，以及大量深受欢迎的大提琴小品。其《精灵之舞》（Dance
of The
Elves）是经常演出的曲目。他的48首大提琴练习曲，被称为可以与肖邦的钢琴练习曲相提并论的重要教程。在波帕尔之前，很多大提琴曲需要从小提琴作品改编，在至波帕尔时代，则有许多小提琴家改编他的大提琴作品来演奏。
