When he1 was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken2 at the elbow.
2 Get … badly broken: …
When it healed, and Jem’s fears of3never being able to play football were assuaged4, he was seldom self-conscious about his injury.
3 Sb’s fear of doing sth
4 Assuage /əˈsweɪdʒ/
To assuage his wife's grief, he took her on a tour of Europe.
His left arm was somewhat5shorter than his right; when he stood or walked, the back of his hand was at right angles to6 his body, his thumb parallel to7his thigh. He couldn’t have cared less8, so long as he could pass and punt.
5 Somewhat /ˈsʌm.wɑːt/: adv.
He concluded that Oswald was somewhat abnormal
6 At right angles to:与……
7 Parallel to:与……平行
8 Couldn’t have cared less:
When enough years had gone by9to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to10 his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior11, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out.
(时光流逝,我们会说,with time going by)
A lack of prudence may lead to financial problems.
11 …years my senior:
I said if he wanted to take a broad view of12 the thing, it really began with Andrew Jackson. If General Jackson hadn’t run the Creeks up the creek, Simon Finch would never have paddled up the Alabama, and where would we be if he hadn’t? We were far too old to13 settle an argument with a fist-fight, so we consulted Atticus. Our father said we were both right.
12 Take a broad view of:看得长远;纵观
13 Far too … to…:太……
(too…to…
14 Fist-fight
