When I Was
One-and-Twenty

当我年方二十一

When I was
one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man
say,
"Give crowns and pounds and
guineas
But not your heart
away;
Give pearls away and
rubies
But keep your fancy
free."
But I was
one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to
me.
二十一岁那一年
智者开口将我劝，
“英镑金币可赠人，
且莫付出一片心；
珍珠红玉亦可抛，
不羁梦想为至宝。“
年方廿一无心听，
谆谆告诫过耳风。
When I was
one-and-twenty
I heard him say
again,
"The heart out of the
bosom
Was never given in
vain;
'Tis paid with sighs a
plenty
And sold for endless
rue."
And I am
two-and-twenty,
And oh, 'tis true, 'tis
true.
二十一岁那一年
智者再次将我劝，
”情意拳拳剖心肺
付出并非无回馈；
换得叹息声绵绵
悔恨作酬怨无边。”
而今我已廿二岁，
始信智者真智慧。

【溪注】
Give crowns and pounds and guineas：分别是克朗（即五先令，最后一次铸造是1965年，1970年停止流通）、英镑、畿尼（英国的旧金币，值一镑一先令）。
