周利群，1961年出生于湖北，1984年毕业于湖北美术学院教育系。现为教育部艺术教育委员会委员，中国职业教育学会教学工作委员会艺术设计专业研究会秘书长，广东省高校美术与设计专业委员会副主任，深圳职业技术学院艺术设计学院院长、教授。

著名艺术评论家鲁虹这样说：

“我与利群是湖北美术学院的校友，而且同学中国画。到深圳后，因各自忙于工作，彼此很少见面。只知道他在深圳职业技术学院艺术设计学院当了院长，工作也抓得很出色，并深得上级与师生好评。前不久，我去深职院当招聘新教师的考官。工作完毕，利群请我去他的画室喝茶，令我完全没有想到的是，他竟然画了很多的画。但不是中国画，而是水彩画！”

与强调以极写实手法反映现实的英国水彩画家不同，利群画水彩更强调追求中国写意画的神韵。可以说，他的英国前辈画的是眼前之景，他却画的是心中之景。

这无疑与他学中国画的背景有关。

从画面的境色来看，利群常常在自然的启示下，为突出一种特殊的艺术境界，做夸张化的加减与挪移工作。

在这里，所谓加减是增添若干境色或去掉若干境色，挪移是将另一视野或想象中的若干景色画入画中。

于是，画中之境色远不是客观对象了;从运笔来看，利群十分强调书法韵味或对作画过程的表现，所以他画中对干湿浓淡枯笔法的娴熟运用，使画面既生动又耐看;从用色上看，他常有意偏离自然，转而用一种主调去统帅全画，这也是他的画总显得特别纯净，且具有意趣的原因之一。

总的来说，利群喜好用湿画法作画，并多用方阔笔，非常大气。常常是激情所至、一挥而就，不拘小节。可想而知，没有了然于胸的意象，没有扎实的造型能力、画面构成能力与运色能力，他是绝对不可能取得如此成就的。
