他是一位创作“小人书”的“大画家”。连环画家贺友直说：“他是一个真正的国画大家，国学底蕴深厚，饱览诗书，书法也写得很好。当下的国画界正需要这样一种学无止境的精神。而他为人的风骨、大度和正直，更值得画坛后人学习和敬仰。”

刘旦宅

（1931～2011年），原名浑，又名小粟，后改名旦宅，别名海云生，浙江温州人。擅长中国古典著作人物画。中国美术家协会会员，曾任职于上海人民美术出版社。后为上海中国画院画师，上海师范大学美术系主任、教授、中国美术家协会上海分会理事，上海中国画院画师、上海师范大学美术学院名誉院长。

所绘《红楼梦十二金钗》邮票，曾获1981年全国邮票最佳奖。1985年获中国奥林匹克委员会颁发的《中国体育美术展览》荣誉奖。作品有《刘旦宅聊斋百图》、《石头记人物画册》等。

刘旦宅，幼年家境贫寒，自幼喜好绘画。他小时候就比同龄的孩子更早知道了“三国演义”、“水浒传”、“封神演义”中的传奇人物，知道了祖国著名的风景名胜……勤奋与天赋让他少年成名，有“神童”之誉。10岁时曾在温州举办过“十龄童刘小粟画展”。

解放后，刘旦宅在家乡已小有名气，1951年到上海，为私营大中国图画出版社画书籍插图、教学挂图等，亦作连环画。刘旦宅一生给世人留下很多作品，1953年他完成了首部连环画“马专员审案”，1954年第二部连环画是为人民美术出版社画的《屈原》，并于1963年全国连环画评奖中获得二等奖。

1979年春访问日本、10月在上海举行个人画展。作品多次入选国内外大型美术作品展览及在多种专业报刊上发表，多次被美术馆、博物馆、艺术馆收藏。

2011年3月2日刘旦宅在上海中山医院因病辞世，享年80岁。
