吴作人(1908—1979）祖籍安徽省泾县。生于江省苏州市。从师著名画家徐悲鸿先生，吴作人在60余年艺术生涯中深深扎根于中华优秀的文化传统的沃土中。

他禀赋深厚，学贯中西，刻意探求，大胆创新。他以“法由我变，艺为人生”的艺术观，循着“师造化，夺天工”的创作道路，继承和发展传统，为“中国水墨画”的开拓了新的风貌，从理论和实践上都作出了重大的贡献，是我国当代美术史上承前启后的一代杰出的美术家和美术教育家。他的作品无数次地参加国内外各种展览，其作品为海内外收藏家、博物馆所搜求。

多次应邀赴世界各地讲学、举办个展或联展、参观访问、文化交流等活动。1984年法国政府文化部授予他“艺术与文学最高勋章”，1986年比利时国王授予他“王冠级荣誉勋章”。曾任中央美术学院教授、名誉院长，中国美术家协会主席。
