作者罗伯特创作这本书的过程很有意思,而且非常励志。早年罗伯特做学生的时候,有一次在波士顿公共花园写生,听说一群鸭子将灯塔街的交通堵塞了,他觉得这件事情很有趣,于是以此为原形开始构思故事。可当故事雏形初现时,罗伯特却发现他没法象鸭子一样思考,也画不好鸭子。我们现在看到的绘本故事里面,鸭子们栩栩如生,神情姿态各异,完美演绎了故事情节。罗伯特最终是如何克服困难,跨越自身局限的呢?他花了两年时间在纽约的自然历史博物馆里研究绿头鸭。 为了细致入微地近距离观察鸭子,他还买了不少鸭子回家,养在自己的浴缸里。鸭子们吵吵闹闹,天刚刚亮就开始嘎嘎叫起来。罗伯特常常一只手拿着纸巾,另一只手拿着画板,跟着鸭子们走走画画。鸭子们不能长时间站立,罗伯特便给它们灌酒。 正是这些努力,造就了书中历久不衰,深受大小读者喜爱的鸭子形象。

孩子通过故事学习的英语词汇,因为有故事背景,常常会印象深刻。讲读英文绘本是构建英语词汇一个很好的方式。讲读这个故事,对英文程度不同的孩子要强调不同的词汇。初级程度的孩子强调初级阶段用语的熟练,同时学习中级程度的词汇,其他部分则需要多用中文来辅助理解。中级程度的孩子要注重熟悉中级程度的语言,中英文并用解释难度较高的词汇。而高级程度的孩子则尽可能全部使用英文解释。下面是这个故事里面一些关键词汇,大致的级别以及建议的活动,可供参考:
