This volume, and a forthcoming companion volume on antiquarianism and archaism in Japanese and Korean art, result from two symposia organized by the Center for the Art of East Asia and held at the University of Chicago in May 2006 and November 2006 to examine the role of antiquarianism and archaism in East Asian art and visual culture. The present volume focuses on China, the selected papers bringing to the forefront the important role of the study and emulation of the past as moving forces in the continuous renewal and reshaping of cultural identity in China from ancient times to the modern age. These essays examine Chinese historical perspectives on the art and visual culture of the past through exploring evidence of archaism and antiquarianism; the former can be seen as revival of obsolete art styles, and latter as a broad range of activity involving intellectual interest in and engagement with ancient remains. Together they provide a conceptual framework for research on a wide variety of cultural activities such as artistic production, collecting, compiling, and publishing, as well as on the history of key figures, events, and technologies. These studies provide insights into the motivating forces, philosophies, and intentions inherent in archaistic and antiquarian practices. In demonstrating the persistence of these practices through dynastic ages and across regions and cultural and ethnic groups, they expand and redefine the scope of the field of research and lay new foundations for future work.
