Dear Peter,
I'm very glad to learn that you're coming to Jiujiang as an
exchange student and take an interest in what we high school
students do after school.
In high schools, there exist different varieties of
activities. Among them, photographing, singing, speech contests and
all kinds of sports are common as well as popular, and all these
benefit us a lot. Playing football and reading stories are my
favorites, which not only help build me up and enrich my knowledge,
but also help release pressure.

W: Yes, I had a great time. I went to Inner Mongolia with some of my friends. We went mountain climbing near Baotou, and we stayed in a tent at night and cooked meals over an open fire.
M: Sounds cool! Did you like the people there?
W: Yes, they were nice. We met some farmers and they invited us to have tea in their house.
M: What an interesting experience!

M: Sure.
W: Well, how much pocket money you get from your parents every month?
M: About 50 dollars.
W: Do you get pocket money in other ways?
M: Yes. Most of my friends take part-time jobs to get pocket money. So do I. I look after my neighbor’s baby every Friday evening. They pay me 12 dollars an hour. So I can get 48 dollars from them every week.
W: Then, how do you usually spend your pocket money?
M: Well, I pay my phone bill every month. And sometimes I have to buy books for my study.
W: What a nice young man! Thank you for talking with us.

M: Lily, where do you like to eat?
W: Well, my favorite restaurant is The Knife and Talk. It’s very near the city center. At lunch it’s full of office workers, but I like to go before that, in the middle of the morning. I go there and order big breakfast and take one of their newspapers and just relax for an hour or so. Their pancakes are delicious. They don’t have a TV in there, which I love most. They just have some jazz music, very quiet, nothing too loud. What’s your favorite restaurant?
M: Well, it’s just a very simple restaurant. There are only about six tables in there. A couple of waitresses wear ugly pink uniforms. But the food is great, very tasty, and cheap too, which is important, of course. There are some truck drivers sitting at the counter drinking coffee and eating sausages every morning. I always have pancakes in the morning and their fish pie for lunch. That restaurant has been open for many years. They say the actor James Dean eats there sometimes, but I don’t think that’s true.

W: Good morning, everyone. This is Helen Green
with What to Do Today on the air. It’s quite a warm and
sunny Saturday. Now, if you’ve got nothing to do today, why not go
to East Mountain in the city and get digging? That’s the message
from Sussex Middle School. It is organizing a tree-planting
activity in East Mountain.
Sussex Middle School is a member of the organization of Helping Blind Children. It is raising money for poor blind children in Asia by planting trees. A famous computer company agrees to give $30 for each tree to be planted in the city. Sussex Middle School is planning to plant 1,500 trees this weekend. Students and their parents are hoping to plant a half today. They are looking for volunteers to come along and help. Tree-planting experience is not necessary as there will be experts to give directions. Thick gloves will be provided to protect your hands when you are doing the digging. There’re also hats provided. And please do bring basic tools with you to dig holes and water trees. Everyone is welcome to come along anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend. So it could be really a nice day out for all the families.
