THE PEACOCK AND THE CRANE  孔雀和鹤

【原文】

A PEACOCK taunted a Crane with the dullness of her plumage. “ Look at my brilliant colours,” said she, “ and see how much finer they are than your poor feathers.”

“ I am not denying,” replied the Crane, “ that yours are far gayer than mine ; but when it comes to flying I can soar into the clouds, whereas you are confined to the earth like any dunghill cock.”

【知识点】

1.peacock孔雀；pea豌豆，cock公鸡，所以身上长满豌豆的鸡就是孔雀？

U君顺便帮大家查了一下孔雀的资料：孔雀无论在古代东方还是西方都是十分尊贵的象征。在东方的传说中，孔雀是由百鸟之长凤凰得到交合之气后育生的，与大鹏为同母所生，被如来佛祖封为大明王菩萨。在西方的神话中，孔雀则是天后郝拉的圣鸟，因为赫拉在罗马神话中被称为朱诺，因此孔雀又被称为“朱诺之鸟”（Bird of Juno)

2.taunt嘲弄，奚落；英语里表示“嘲笑”的词有很多，比如laugh at，ridicule，mock，deride等等。

3.crane 鹤，起重机。因为起重机的脖子跟鹤的很像？这个词做动词时表示“伸着脖子看”，例如She craned her neck to get a better view. 她伸长脖子以便看得清楚一些。是不是比stretch高级很多？

4.dullness 迟钝，呆滞。形容词dull呆滞的。

5.plumage翅膀，羽毛。

【译文】

孔雀看不起白鹤羽毛的色泽，她一边张开美丽羽毛，一边讥笑他说：我披挂得金碧辉煌，五彩缤纷；而你的羽毛一片灰暗，十分难看。

“ I am not denying,” replied the Crane, “ that yours are far gayer than mine ; but when it comes to flying I can soar into the clouds, whereas you are confined to the earth like any dunghill cock.”

【知识点】

1.gayer，gay的比较级。gay作名词时表示同性恋，但是做形容词时可以表示“艳丽的”。

2.soar n.v.高飞，翱翔。roar咆哮。

3.dunghill cock普通公鸡。dunghill粪堆；dung（粪） hill（小山）=粪堆，在粪堆上刨食的鸡就是普通的家禽。提到粪便，U君顺便给大家普及一下各种粪便的说法，口语中可以用shit，生理上可以用faeces['fiːsiːz]，或者excrement（排泄物）。

【译文】

鹤说道：我不否认，你的羽毛比我漂亮很多。可我能翱翔太空；而你却同公鸡和家禽一般，只能在地上行走罢了。
