有一次，黄问苏，我的字写的如何？苏调侃说，你的字是“树梢挂蛇”。黄听后一笑，那您老的字便是“石压蛤蟆”了。

“树梢挂蛇”又叫“死蛇挂树”，与“石压蛤蟆”同出自王羲之所作的《笔势论十二章》“字之形势……不宜伤长，长则似死蛇挂树；不宜伤短，短则似踏死蛤蟆。”这正好反映了字之形势的两个极端，“死蛇挂树”说明了其字长，笔画细软，而无力，似病。“石压蛤蟆”说明了其字，短而扁，似喘不过气来。黄与苏的字正好各有其特点。
