swan song出自希腊神话。在希腊神话中，天鹅是太阳神兼艺术之神阿波罗（Apollo）的神鸟。传说天鹅平素不唱歌，而死前则引颈长鸣，高歌一曲，它的歌声哀婉动听，感人肺腑。因此，人们就用swan song来比喻诗人、作家、画家、音乐家等艺术家的最后作品或者演出，可译为“绝唱”或“绝笔”。而到了现在，任何人的最后的努力都可以用swan song来表示。It can now refer to the final effort of any person。

在美国现实主义作家杰克伦敦（Jack London）的作品《马丁伊登》（Martin Eden）中有这样一个句子：He wondered if he ought to write a swan song, but laughed the thought away. There was no time.根据我们刚刚对于swan song的解释，这个句子可以翻译为：“他想自己是否应该写一篇绝笔之作，但又一笑了之。没有时间了。”

莎士比亚（William Shakespeare）在《奥赛罗》（Othello）第五幕第二场中也用过这个典故，是这么说：

I will play the swan, and die in music.

我要像天鹅一样，在歌声中死去。
