翻译成语的方法之二直译与意译相结合

        在翻译过程中，有时碰到一些汉语成语，如果完全直译，不懂中文的人就对译文感到莫名其妙；如果全部意译又失去了原文的形象性。这时就采用直译与意译相结合的办法来解决，使译文既清楚、准确、又具有形象性。

       如：做一天和尚撞一天钟。如果直译为One goes on tolling the bell so long so one is a monk.不懂汉语的人就会丈二和尚摸不着头脑。如果译为：Make a passive attitude  towards one's work(Or:follow a routine,or:do the least that is expected of ones,)原文的形象性就没有了。如果把直译和意译相结合起来，就较完全了。

        又如：坐上观虎斗。如果直译为：sit on the top of the mountain to watch the tigers fight,则意思不清楚，外国人不易理解。如果再加一个，watch both go for each other 则意思清楚多了。

        又如：走马观花：Look at flowers  while riding on the back of a galloping horse-give a cursory glance.

        捉襟见肘：Pull down one's jacket to conceal raggedness ,only to expose one's  elbows-in a predicament.

        朝秦暮楚：Serve the State of Qin in the morning and the State of Chu in the evening -Play fast and loose (or:quick  to swich sides,or :be fickle ,or:inconsistent ,or :changeable)

        以上译法有它的优点，即原文的意义和形象能最大程度地表达出来。但只有一定的成语才有必要这样译。这种译法也有它的缺点，即不能用较简练的形式表达原文的意义和形象，译文啰嗦冗长，有伤原文简洁有力的风格。在翻译这类成语时应特别注意用最少的字去表达原文的丰姿。如果估计读者根据上下文关系能够理解直译的英文，就不必再加意译；如果原文成语的形象性已经基本消失，还是采取意译为妙。
