Maggie Smith comes to Toronto for TIFF and to receive the Stratford Shakespeare Festival Legacy Award.

By RICHARD OUZOUNIANTheatre Critic

Fri., Sept. 7, 2012

LONDON—The Right Honourable Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, glided through the chicly restored lobby of the Savoy Hotel, sat down at a corner table in the Thames Foyer and turned aside an offer of the room’s legendary high tea, requesting instead an icy glass of white wine.

Heads turned; they always do. Because this is Dame Maggie Smith, currently riding a tsunami of popularity due to the success of the PBS superseries Downton Abbey.

She also trails unassumingly behind her a train made up of 60 years in show business that has won her seven BAFTA awards, two Oscars, two Golden Globes, two Emmys, two SAG awards, an Olivier Award and a Tony.

She’s touching down briefly in Toronto over the

SMITH: (As Diana Barrie) What was the best picture?

MICHAEL CAINE: (As Sidney Cochran) The best picture? You were there when they announced it. It came after the best actress.

SMITH: (As Diana Barrie) I was in a deep depression at the time. What was the best bloody picture?

CAINE: (As Sidney Cochran) You mean what was the best picture of the year or what did those idiots pick as the best picture of the year?

SMITH: (As Diana Barrie) What won the award you [expletive]?

CAINE: (As Sidney Cochran) I'm not an [expletive]. Don't you call me that.

SMITH: (As Diana Barrie) Sidney, I have just thrown up on some of the best people in Hollywood. Now is no time to be sensitive. What was the best picture?

CAINE: (As Sidney Cochran) I'm not telling you.

SMITH: (As Diana Barrie) I'm not asking you. I'm threatening you, you crud.

CAINE: (As Sidney Cochran) Now I'm definitely not going to t

DAVIES: That is our guest, Maggie Smith, with Elizabeth McGovern from a moment of 'Downton Abbey.' I mean, you know, this is a wonderful ensemble cast. But everyone remembers you and those terrific lines you have. Did you realize what a great comedic role this was when you first got it?

SMITH: Yes, yes I did. I thought it was great fun because she was so - well, obviously the oldest in the group. And it was wonderful because she would just sort - she was in the position where she could say what she wanted to say because she was the elder and they deferred to her. And that was - it was fun. I'm so glad you said that about the ensemble because we got three awards for ensemble work, which is really good - three SAG awards, which is terrific, for the whole company.

DAVIES: We're speaking with Maggie Smith. She stars in the new film 'The Lady In The Van.' We will continue our conversation in just a moment. This is FRESH AIR.

Maggie Smith On The Pressures Of Acting: 'You Want So Much To Get It Right'

February 23, 20161:55 PM ET

Heard on Fresh Air

Known for her recent work in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films, the Oscar-winning actress now stars in TheLady in the Van, a film about an elderly woman who lived in a van for 15 years.

DAVE DAVIES, HOST:

This is FRESH AIR. I'm Dave Davies in for Terry Gross, who's off this week. Our guest today is British actress Maggie Smith, who's been working for half a century and has appeared in more than 50 films. She's among only a handful of performers to win best actress and best supporting actress at the Academy Awards. Those honors, for 'The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie' and 'California Suite,' date back to 1970 and '79. But Maggie Smith has become better known t

EVERYONE’S FAVORITE DAME CLEARS A FEW THINGS UP: SHE NEVER WANTED TO BE A SEX GODDESS, SHE’S NOT A BITCH, AND SHE’S NOT 92.

CONGRATULATIONSAFTER NEARLY 50 MOVIES, TWO OSCARS, COUNTLESS STAGE APPEARANCES, AND A TITLE FROM THE QUEEN, YOU’RE NOW A PLASTIC ACTION FIGURINE AS HARRY POTTER’S PROFESSOR McGONAGALL. MUST MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’VE REALLY ARRIVED, HUH?
No, I’ll tell you when I really thought I’d made it: You know those big advertisements on the side of a bus? Well, I can actually be seen on a London bus in a witch’s hat. I’ve always thought THAT was stardom.

NO, STARDOM IS THE WAY YOUR ACID-TONGUED CONSTANCE STEALS ROBERT ALTMAN’S GOSFORD PARK FROM PRACTICALLY EVERY BIG-DEAL BRIT ACTOR ALIVE. STILL, YOU’VE NEVER REALLY PURSUED HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITY, HAVE YOU?
Mmm, to speak truth, I don’t think I’d be doing this [interview] if it weren’t for Bob Altman—I’d do ANYTHING for h

Dame Maggie Smith is in full dowager countess mode.

‘What exactly is Twitter?’ she demands, wrinkling her nose in the rarefied air of Canada’s most august hotel, the majestic Royal York in Toronto. ‘Someone told me over lunch that Lady Grantham has an account on it, and I really don’t understand it at all.’

‘It’s about sending short messages,’ says her friend Dustin Hoffman, who is sitting next to her. ‘You should get on to it – Maggie Smith Twitter, I can see it now. You send out real short messages... of what is it, 24 words? 140 characters...?’

The trials of Twitter

‘A hundred and forty characters?’ The grande dame of the London theatrical scene looks sceptical. ‘That’s an awfully big cast.’

‘Characters as in letters,’ says Dustin. ‘And you could wither someone in a lot less.’

To take tea with Maggie and Dustin, you would think they had known each other for all their lives. Clearly relaxed,

长者有名言曰“too young, too simple, too navie”,说的就是幼稚如我者。
